Like/hate; I can't stand the first half, but the second half is delightful.
Start at "Well, that was unpleasant" and don't believe for a moment that reading the earlier half will enlighten, because it won't. I like the final section, but I think the story would be perfect if it only consisted of the fifth through seventh sections.

One of those rare stories that captures an era as people lived it instead of treating it as a dreamland or soapbox. Novel in two parts, chapters 1-14 and 15-30. There is a low-key het romance, and references to details of non-het relationships. Refers to other stories in the author's series, but it's not necessary to read any of them first.

Four-year-old Luna has been able to see lights her whole life- and when both of her parents die in an explosive magical accident, she decides to grab on to one of the lights and follow it.
Meanwhile, Regulus Black has never really thought of himself as the parental sort- he's hardly interacted with a child in his life, much less raised one. But when two magically inexplicable orphans show up and somehow resurrect him- well, what else was he supposed to do? Not immediately adopt them? Yeah, right.
(Features little Luna and Harry adopting each other as siblings and Regulus being in way, way over his head)

Twenty-two-year-old Snape heard where the Potter child had been placed, made a welfare check, disliked what he found, and laid it squarely on Dumbledore's desk. A good general adapts his plans to evolving circumstances.
Frequent spelling errors. Slow first page.

Summary
In 1993, Gilderoy Lockhart points a stolen wand at Harry Potter and Ron Weasley with the intent to Obliviate them. The wand doesn't backfire. Gilderoy's "discovery" of the Chamber of Secrets is a short-term success.
Other consequences are not short-term at all.
Archived Author's Notes:
I was watching the Chamber of Secrets movie several years back when the scene in question began to play...and immediately I wanted to know what would happen if the wand had done what it was supposed to do. The answer got very complicated, very, *very* quickly.Blame Edgar Allan Poe for the title.

Snape keeps ending up with more responsibilities. This turns out rather well, all things considered.
Snape has had to consider the possibility for months, but tonight confirms it. Every single plan laid out for the next five years has just become useless. He doesn’t know how to replace them, and he has to.
Uneven, quality goes up and down. Technically gen, although couples are often commented on.
One that does nice things with Millicent Bullstrode.
