Summary
“Lawrence, you- you’re going to find another girl. A nice girl, Lar, a pretty one,” He laughs nervously, unable to shake the uncomfortable nervous habit.
“That isn't what I want!” Lawrence huffs like a petulant child the second Adam’s vocal chords go still, tightening his grip on the chair that he’s using to support his weight.
Maybe it’s the wine, maybe it’s the hour, or maybe it’s the endless pining, but Adam can’t hold himself back anymore. He wants to know so badly that he doesn’t care if he’s crossing the line.
“Then what do you want, Lawrence?!” A bitter pettiness suddenly undercuts Adam’s words, a selfish sort of anger that says why not me?
“You!” Lawrence shouts at him, and Adam is so taken aback by Lawrence shouting at him, at how quickly this has escalated, that he doesn’t even register what he’s said. But then Lawrence continues, throwing his hands up in desperate abandon, “I want you!”

Lawrence smiles like the lovesick fool he is and carries on listening to Adam’s soft breathing, more comfortable and happy than he’s felt in a long time.
Suddenly, Adam lets out a soft noise, and it’s immediately too high-pitched to be content as it should be. Lawrence has seen Adam at his very worst, screaming and crying in the way no human ever should. He knows Adam, he knows Adam’s sounds, and now, Adam sounds pained, and he sounds sad.
Lawrence has had his fair share of hurting the people he loves. The moment he realized he was in love with Adam, months ago, over breakfast, he swore to himself he wouldn’t do it this time. He couldn’t do it again.

He’s incredulous, looking at Lawrence as if he had backhanded him across the face. It’s endearing, if not a bit concerning.
“I love you,” Lawrence repeats, as if Adam hadn’t heard him the first time. As if he hadn’t understood- Adam understood plenty. Love, L-O-V-E, those three big words, the ones Adam found only in shitty rom-coms and Deftones songs. Now directed at him, of all people.

“I’m cold,” Adam mutters, closing in on himself. He knows it’s pathetic to get Lawrence’s attention in this way, and he normally never does. But the insecurity is bone-deep tonight, and Lawrence is so attentive that Adam knows this will work.
“Cold?” Lawrence looks up from his book and over at him instantly, adorably concerned. “Are you getting sick, angel?”
“No,” Adam says simply, unable to meet his eyes.
He tucks his knees in like a child, as if he could ever successfully hide from his boyfriend.
Realization washes over Lawrence’s soft features. He knew Adam better than anyone in the world- Adam doesn’t know why he ever doubts him. He knows when Adam is okay, and he knows when he isn’t. He knows. It might’ve made Adam feel claustrophobic, a few years ago. But today, living with the love of his life, he can’t remember a gratitude so acute.
“Oh, darling…,” Lawrence pauses, hoping he isn’t wrong. “Would cuddling help?”
