Stiffly, George pivoted. He forced one foot in front of the other until he caught up with the fray. They went toward the road. His steps stayed uneven, dragging. His knuckles blanched with the strength of how he clenched his fist, red dripping from his palm.
He didn’t look back.
He couldn’t look back. ]This was a rewrite for the ending of Of Mice and Men for a class.

"What kind of dickwad designs a car with a two-part oil filter?" He groaned to himself under his breath.
"I did."
A beat passes. George blinked, shocked. Oh.
"Sorry- What?"
With nimble hands, Slim lazily passed George his business card, the glossy paper screaming corporate. "Samuel 'Slim' Henderson." He introduced himself. "Lead Designer at Jackson Motors."
