Merlin’s pale eyes flicked up, and it hit Jim just how…old Merlin looked. His eyes were tired, and his shoulders were hunched, as if he, too, carried the world upon his shoulders and had done so for a very long time.
The master wizard confessed, “I fought with a Trollhunter before, at the Battle of Killahead Bridge. Deya, was her name. I’ve heard the fool with six eyes refer to her as ‘Deya the Deliverer.’ I suppose she was a deliverer, for some. But she was not enough for me.”
Merlin trailed off, and his gaze fogged over again, as if his mind was somewhere else. “…I was not enough, that day.”

What do you do when your best friend has been turned into a half-monster by the warlord who wants to pull a "Tender is The Flesh" with all of humanity? Hunt him down and drag him to Heartstone Trollmarket to snap him back to his senses of course!
After the events of 'Son of Gunmar', the honorary Trollhunters are left with the consequences of Jim's decision to head into the Darklands. With an unexpected traitor in their mist, keeping Gunmar's escape and Jim's new state under wraps, Blinky's decidedly not-actually-dead brother, and trying to figure out how to return Jim to normal, it is not looking like they'll see a light at the end of the tunnel. If they did, it'd probably be a train given their luck!

(In this AU Jim was a product of a union between a rogue Kubera and a human. The Kubera, on the brink of death due to sun damage, gave up her last moments with her cub to defend her mate from Bular, though unsuccessful, she had bought enough time for her mate to hide their son.
After an unknown amount of time Blinky and Arrrgh found the boy and after some debate decided to raise him as their own with the help of a human: Barbara Lake. This story follows Jim, an aspiring scholar in Troll magic, who was chosen to become the new Trollhunter and thus being marked for death.
Now, Jim needs to find a new balance between his human life, troll life, all of his studies AND defending Troll kind from the Gumgums that threaten their very existance.)

Summary
Jim Lake happened to find an amulet. He happened to become the Trollhunter. He somehow wasn't dead yet.
But fate's an asshole, and in reality, Jim would never have gotten far from the realm of trolls.
Just a few quick notes about this before reading. First off, credit where credit is due, I found this idea while reading a few other fics, so I can’t even pretend to say that this is new. Secondly, I really enjoy writing based off the source, so a lot of my episode based portions, and as much as I can, will be real scenes written into the book. Third, I tried to name my chapters by episode accordingly, so if there’s a title (like Young Atlas), know that that’s pulling directly from that episode, and any unrecognized titles happen during then. And there will be some time skipping, simply because in my mind some of the original episodes would be exactly how it would’ve happened in this as well, and instead of completely stealing from DreamWorks, I’d rather focus on the parts with transformative content in them. I also wrote this while following the show, so there may be parts that seem to skip, but they just follow what the show does.
