      -
The boy breathes out, feels thoughts that hadn't connected before and presses his knuckles to his head. The drumming—a noise Missy had thought she would never hear again—had quieted down until it was nearly silent; a noise that Harry wouldn't be conscious of if he didn't focus on it, like white noise ringing in his ear, or a clock in the room.

For the first time in months since Harry had been plagued by the nonstop drumming, there was finally silence in his head.

This isn't regeneration. He thinks, knows it in his guts and finally understands what those words mean. There's no post-haze or sickness. In fact, if he just presses his hand against his chest—he'd hear only one heartbeat instead of two. He wasn't even a Time Lord—or Lady—anymore, he was just plain and excruciatingly human. Human.

His knuckles are white with the force he's squeezing—Harry can feel the blunt edges of his nails digging into his skin and when he releases the grip, sees that there are pale, crescent marks. This isn't a Chameleon Arch, either. But, his mind protests.

He knows that a human brain can't house the entirety that consists of a Time Lord's mind. It's impossible, it's a death sentence. It would be like trying to house an ocean inside of a small pool, the casing would shatter. He knows it so, Harry's seen it happen with one of the—

      One of the—

      The—

      He blinks.

(Her bumbling idiot. Missy thinks, with fondness and annoyancehatredlov—)

Harry reaches and his fingers metaphorically catch smoke. The wisps break under his touch and dissipate into nothingness. A slow panic breaks out in him, easing unto, creeping and prowling.

There's a man. A great man, this Harry knows, because it felt like, when he was Missy, that when she stood beside him, it was like standing beside the stars themselves.

(Oh, I hoped there'd be stars in the sky.)
      -
There's a man. A man, with so many faces—he can make out the edges of them, blurred and features indistinguishable from the other. Harry can't even see what they're wearing, but he knows that there is this man—his man, that brings with him hopehatefondsoftannoyancepitybetrayal— and the tickling of something warm, a phantom second heartbeat. Warm and so very soft.

Harry hesitates, because he knows of it instinctively, can feel it sometimes when he's holed up in the cramped cupboard, breathing shakily into his hands, feels it rattling in his ribcage. It's warm and gentle, wrapping around him and so, so full of love. But, he— Missy— Harry, is so afraid of loving this great, mystery man. A man of the stars.

(Missy knows that loving him is like loving the sun. Or the very stars that both her and him had promised to visit when they were little boys. The brilliance of it would burn you inside out, scorch you until you were nothing, she knows it with firsthand experience.

And she knows that you can't drag the stars down and make them shine just for you, no matter how much she willed it to be.)

So, there is a man. A great, brilliant and shining man of the stars—Harry's star man. Harry—Missy loveshates him and Harry, sitting before the weak, orange light of the cupboard's bulb, can't remember him.
      -
      Notes:
I couldn’t help it. When I wrote “star man” as two separate words, my brain just went “SPACEMAN!”
And so it made Harry’s Starman. Sigh.

The Doctor, usually, does a fine job as passing for Human. They slip up, every once in a while. Of course they do. Spend enough time around humans and at least one of them is going to catch on.

    These are the slip-ups.

An anthology series focused on the more unsettling implications of being friends with a centuries-old alien.

    Summary

The Brigadier first met the individual known as “The Doctor” five years ago. Though he still is largely uncertain of who he is, or from where he has come, there are two things he does know.

    1. That he poses a threat of incredible proportions to the people of planet Earth.

    2. That he, the Brigadier, will do anything in his power to stop him.

Or in other words, UNIT thinks the Doctor is an alien who keeps abducting people, even though he's just going about his usual business, and his companions are perfectly happy to travel with him. The Brigadier keeps tracking him down, but never seems to succeed in catching him. Eventually they realize that this whole thing was just one big misunderstanding. Eventually.

    Summary

Behind him, Jack hears a light footfall and the swish of petticoats. —Damn, he still doesn’t even know her name.

He doesn’t give her the satisfaction of seeing pain from him. Instead, he meets her gaze head-on, cool and distant and every inch the soldier.

She laughs at him. It’s a high-pitched giggle, like the joke is genuinely hilarious, and he’s simply missing out. It’s disconcerting: if there really is humour here, he is certainly on the outside of it.

Or: Jack gets captured in wartime by Missy. Then the Doctor shows up and it really all goes to hell.
