“The hat rule,” Zoey confirmed. There was a dramatic pause and Rumi was just about ready to whip out her phone and look it up herself before Zoey continued. “The hat rule used to just mean basic etiquette for wearing a stetson but now it basically means ‘if you wear a cowboy hat, you have to ride the cowboy. In your case, the cowgirl.”
Rumi blinked slowly, her brain not fully connecting or short-circuiting. She wasn’t sure which one, “I’m sorry…what?”
Zoey rolled her eyes and laughed.
“It means Mira just told every person in this arena to back the fuck off because you’re hers.”

Summary

Will saw him as he came around the front of the truck, holding a guitar case and smiling goodnaturedly at Hop. He said something, but Will couldn’t tell you what it was. He had been expecting someone older, maybe a little more grizzled or worn down. But this boy was young, maybe Will’s age, and….breathatking. That was the only word for it. He was tall and thin, with a dark mop of curls falling over his dark eyes and sharp cheekbones. He reached for the duffle bag from Hop with hands that were long and elegant. Will was staring, he knew he was staring, but he couldn’t stop. It wasn’t long before the boy noticed too. He caught Will’s eye and held out one of those perfect hands.

Remus wanted the summer of 1978 to be over as fast as possible. The next three months were the last thing that stood between him and four years of foggy gothic buildings, wonderfully pompous academia, and an endless supply of books; he’d received a full ride scholarship into Princeton University, and now all he needed to do was bide his time until he could be shipped back to New Jersey.
It was his grandfather who reached out to Remus with the offer to spend the summer at his ranch in Montana. The letter detailed that if Remus were to stay with him rent-free, he’d greatly appreciate his help as a ranch hand, and though he couldn’t afford to pay him much, he’d do what he could to help Remus’s various college expenses. There’s a pause, and the boy’s eyes widen just slightly. There’s a glimmer there that makes Akito puff his chest out a little, a brow cocking in confusion. The kid leans forward a tad, out of the shadow, and now the man can make out a little mole under a pretty silver eye.
“Shinonome?” he asks, “Like…the bull handler?”
Specific. Odd, too, considering he’s never seen the kid.
“...Mhm?”
The boy bites his lip again, leaning back once more and tucking a long piece of silky hair behind his ear, Akito notices how thin his fingers are, can see all the bones and a faint green-ish vein trailing up his middle finger.
“Aoyagi Toya,” he introduces himself, and Akito half expects him to put that dainty finger out and have him kiss a ring, but the moment never comes. “...I’m not 21, like you said.”
Long evening, longer month.
