Summary
It was a heart. A human heart, strangely unbloodied — ought not a heart be full of blood? It seemed to be pumping away nevertheless. As James watched, it contracted itself in a slow but definitive movement. There was a noticeable odour: not of blood or dead bodies as he might have expected, but like a butcher’s shop. The smell of fresh meat.
Good Christ, what was he to do with this?
Alone on Isla Cruces, Norrington has a lot of time to think. It goes about as well as you’d expect.

Summary
Jaskier had climbed the trail up to the keep before with Geralt and it had definitely taken a lot less time. (The Witchers themselves called it ‘the killer’, and they had the nerve to call Jaskier dramatic). But Geralt was only pretending he wasn’t ill, and Jaskier himself was admittedly tired and sore and hungry again. The bread and dried fruit they’d bought for lunch with their last orrens barely made a dent in it.
After a hard year, Jaskier and Geralt head up to Kaer Morhen for the winter to rest and recover. But they aren’t the only guests, and Jaskier rummages around in everybody’s closets until he finds the ghosts.

Summary
Yennefer pulls back a little; looks him full in the face. He looks somehow — she knows this is not right even as she thinks it — the picture of wide-eyed innocence. Open, vulnerable. She brings up a hand to smooth back his hair — soft, and fine, unlike — but not to think of him now — her own hands are trembling, too; she hadn’t noticed before now. Jaskier bites his lower lip.
In between trying to sacrifice herself to Voleth Meir and trying to make amends with Geralt, Yennefer seeks out comfort from an unlikely source.

Summary
“What are you doing here?” Geralt asked, setting him upright. “Aren’t you worried you’ll catch the pox?”
“Hah,” Jaskier exclaimed, although there was no mirth in it. “Had it when I was a child, didn’t I. Can’t catch it again.” He hiccuped sadly. Before this moment Geralt hadn’t known it was possible to hiccup sadly, but Jaskier was a man of many talents. “‘nother round,” he mumbled at the barman.
In the wake of Essi’s death, Geralt finds Jaskier. He’s not doing so well.

Summary
Ciri wrapped her arms tightly around herself and blinked, her eyes watering in the bright light of the fire. The unnatural, sickening way that Vereena had twisted her neck and arms all the way around swam up in her mind’s eye. She shuddered again and tried to banish the image, but it was difficult. For something to do with her trembling hands, she shook out her hair and began to redo the braid.
Ciri and Geralt leave the carnage at Nivellen’s place behind them, but other ghosts from the past are not so easily shaken off.

Summary
“Triss told me not to mind that none of you knew anything about women,” Ciri laughed. “I wasn’t to expect very much, for you were only men!”
Geralt laughed in spite of himself. “Triss really say that?” At Ciri’s grin, he huffed. “Sounds just like her.”
On the path, Ciri and Geralt take a break and ponder what it means to be a modern 13th century woman.

Summary
The cabin was neat and tidy, with the exception of the body in it.
Ten years after the end of the war, Detective Inspector Francis Crozier tries to go on holiday. This is spoilt by (a) the untimely death of John Franklin and (b) the arrival of irritatingly-overconfident, infuriatingly-attractive Pinkerton agent James Fitzjames.

Summary
“Oh, God,” James groaned. “Am I dead? I think I’m dead.” It was fortunate that the midshipmen’s berth was in the gunroom below the water line, for at least that meant there was no sunlight to contend with down here.
“You aren’t dead,” came Francis’s voice, damnably smug and annoyingly close at hand. “You just smell that way.” James groaned again and tried to block out the noise with his pillow.

Summary
“Deep breaths through your nose,” Alex said to Stephen. He’d never seen anybody look simultaneously so ill and so affronted as dear Stephen did then. It was an effort not to grin. “Do you want the laudanum now?”
“No,” Stephen ground out through his clenched jaw.
“Alright,” Alex soothed. “It’s alright.” John’s back was turned as he clattered around tidying up, but six feet of empty space did not a soundproof barrier make, and so he couldn’t say it quite as he would have liked to. “You should rest here a while before you try to walk back to Erebus,” he continued. “Come, use my cabin. More comfortable than this table.”
Or: Stephen has a toothache. Eventually, he lets Alex help.

Summary
There was a burning, aching feeling in Geralt’s chest; an awful hollowness which was quite unlike potion toxicity or ordinary hunger. He regretted that there was nothing in his pack which he could swallow to soothe the pain; no white honey or golden oriole would help this.
Witchers can’t cry. Geralt is very sure about this.

Summary
Izzy’s eyes were closed; his face relaxed and serene in a way Stede had never known him to achieve other than - oh so ironically - with a stiff prick up his arse. And of course he and Ed were always more than happy to oblige him, for the two of them did so love to indulge in fine things.

Summary
Stanley could not make the offer he wished to, in front of this audience with their wretched ears flapping. “Is there anything that you need?” he asked instead.
Fitzjames swallowed. “Sleep,” he said, and their eyes met for the briefest of instants. The commander looked exhausted, but Stanley knew perfectly well what he meant, and it was not ‘sleep’. ‘Bed’ could have passed muster as accurate enough. It was not a command - Fitzjames had never ordered or demanded this - but Stanley had never denied him nonetheless.
Captain Fitzjames returns from Terror in need of a little comfort. Luckily, he and Doctor Stanley have an arrangement.

Summary
“Oh, you mustn’t think I mind!” Ross said, appallingly cheerful. James was reeling. Surely Ross didn’t mean -? “No, I’m terribly happy for you both. He deserves a bit of happiness,” Ross continued more softly. He hadn’t turned his gaze away from the sea.
“Well,” James said, dazed. “Er. Thank you?” His face was prickling with heat, despite the cool wind which was blowing off the ocean.
“It’s only that Ann and I had quite got used to having Francis all to ourselves,” said Ross.

Summary
If Harry had occasionally entertained notions about going a little further than friendship with Mr Collins, well, that was nobody’s business but his own. He might have pulled himself off, once upon a time, to thoughts of a man such as Collins, big and broad enough to throw Harry around like a doll. A firm, muscled chest and a soft, rounded belly, perfect for Harry to rest his head on. Such lovely kind eyes.

Summary
James bit into a laden slice of toast with the undamaged side of his mouth. “I thought we agreed that thinking was very dangerous,” he said, and though his voice was light Francis could feel a weight behind it. It was a weight made up of sleepless nights and crying jags; of Francis punching a solid wall and of James shouting himself hoarse; of the unbearable social calls and wrenching letters and pitying looks which they could not avoid. They carried a great many heavy things with them, now.
London, 1848: Francis and James try to put themselves back together.
