Jake Peralta used to be a foster kid.
His dad got into some real trouble and his mom lost custody, so for two years, Jake got stuck in the system. He barely remembers most of it, the entire first year clouded in fog of confusion and disarray, but one specific placement is horribly clear.
When he was under the custody of Raymond Holt and Kevin Cozner.
Now, over ten years later, Jake mostly tries to forget about his time in the system, but when his new captain is his old foster parent? It brings up old memories he's tried to bury for a long time.

Summary
Chasing dreams for your children means making sacrifices. Sometimes, those sacrifices are moving to the United States so that your son can be mentored by some of the world's greatest competitors.
Newt's dream has always been to compete in ice skating on the world stage. He was okay, then he was good. Then his parents uprooted his and Sonya's lives, and he became great. Never as good as Thomas, though. If there is one thing Newt had no hope of being, it was consistent. Thomas wasn't great, but he was consistent. Together, Thomas and Newt become the top solo men's skaters for Team USA. Their rivalry is heated, and their romantic entanglements are private.
They both seem set to sweep medals at the upcoming Winter Olympics, but during qualifications, tragedy-or maybe fate-strikes, and Newt finds himself out of the competition. With his skating season over and facing the very real possibility that he may never step onto the ice again, Newt finds himself facing his inner demons. Turns out tying up your sense of self-worth to the one thing you excel at isn't good for you, after all.
It also turns out that the way to get everything-and everyone-you want is to ruin your life with a single mistake.

Newt wants to survive his last year of high school. But he’s got Finals, a college application he hasn’t started, and a gnawing existential crisis about what the hell comes after graduation. He’s always been the sensible one in his friend group, until his best friend goes to some leadership camp during the break and comes back looking like Dylan freaking O’brien. Girls are suddenly whispering about him in the hallway. His hair is better. His voice is deeper. His smile is ‘hot,’ and Newt is losing his fucking mind. Worse? Minho gives zero fucks. He’s just sitting at the lunch table, flipping his stupid flashcards like nothing’s changed.
“Fuck, finals,” Newt mutters, biting into what.. seems to be a muffin from the canteen. He misses bacon. Cherry tomatoes, toast and all the beans but all he’s got is.. Minho, who is making loud sounds with his straw and then *FLICK*

Although the world was never anything close to a utopia for omegas, even before the dead started walking, afterwards things got downright dire. Generally smaller and more prone to stress, it's no surprise that they're the first ones to be cast aside and left for dead. And any packs that they do end up within tend to go even worse.
Techno's seen it himself enough times to know. It's firsthand knowledge.
Luckily for Techno, the majority of his childhood was spent in extremely high stress scenarios, malnourished and never feeling safe. Which means that all of his omega nonsense is so stunted that he practically isn't even one! He is set on keeping everyone under that impression, no matter what it takes.
Even if this new pack seems startlingly different from everything that he was used to before.
