    1900-Following the strike, Spot Conlon is left in a limbo, torn between shouldering the weight his borough or being Spot Conlon, whatever that might mean, for whatever that's worth, which probably isn't much. Maybe that's why, on a day in August when he and Race go to Sheepshead, he lets himself be pulled two ways: toward the city by a hundred hungry hands grabbing at him for help, and in the opposite direction, toward a porcelain tub and a pair of perfectly discerning eyes that look at him without the knowledge of what it means to be the King of Brooklyn. Somehow he knows that both directions are just another way to drown, but he can't stop himself.

    Now it's 1903, and Spot Conlon is being tried for murder, which, granted, isn't the way he expected to drown. Nor did he ever expect an heiress from Long Island to be the only one who could pull him out, if their alibi doesn't drown her too in the process.

    Sex and murder, they always did sell the papers.
