“Oh, you mustn’t think I mind!” Ross said, appallingly cheerful. James was reeling. Surely Ross didn’t mean -? “No, I’m terribly happy for you both. He deserves a bit of happiness,” Ross continued more softly. He hadn’t turned his gaze away from the sea.
“Well,” James said, dazed. “Er. Thank you?” His face was prickling with heat, despite the cool wind which was blowing off the ocean.
“It’s only that Ann and I had quite got used to having Francis all to ourselves,” said Ross.
