"I was thinking" she replied curtly.
"Penny for your thoughts?"
"What do you want to know?, you've basically been ignoring me the whole trip"
There was silence before he answered, "you're upset with me"
"Wow, what gave that away?" She said In dry sarcasm.
OR
Gray has been acting strange around Carmen, for a while now, and it hasn't escaped her notice, shortly after her appointment as faculty and one too many times of him ignoring her, things finally come to a head. (Along with a lot of exposition)

Summary
She felt a bit silly wondering about something so trivial and utterly unrelated to her, it wasn't her place to be thinking about stuff like this but she didn't think it was ridiculous for her to wonder, they liked each other when they weren't in contact, were they together now? Carmen had said that they'd reconnected a while ago so there had certainly been enough time for something to happen.
And considering that carmen seemed to have completely forgotten that she was in the room while talking to him, that certainly gave "totally into your boyfriend" vibes to her.
OR
Five times chief wondered if carmen and gray were together and one time she found out.

He was met with silence, he waited for one or both of them to ask why, and it was only about a minute later when he was considering asking if they were still there, that they finally spoke up.
It was zack this time.

"No, but she needs to so I'm asking"

Summary
Graham always planned to go out in a grand, unique way, y’know- like fighting a horde of armed officers himself- or burning alive. Something sick. Something people would talk about.
‘Electrician gets electrocuted’. How original. Fork found in toaster. He’d say his friends would never let him live this down but it doesn’t seem like he’s going to live through this one at all. Plus, he doesn’t know if he has any of those ‘friends’ left at this point.
Maybe it’s for the best then, he muses as his vision is overtaken by a dark grey, the kind you're only supposed to see when your eyes are closed, that the closest friend he had is the one who pulled the trigger. At least someone will watch him die.
