"But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness".

    1 John 1:9

Edward Teach knows sin and guilt. He's got success and fame, a life that most would envy professionally, but his personal life is another matter entirely. He's shit at relationships, shit at finding happiness, in general, Ed's always been a bit shit. He knows he's floating through life, and eventually floats back into the same city he went to college. The same city he once crushed a sweet guy all for the sake of winning a bet.

And meets Father Stede Bonnet, a man who seems to see into his guilt-laden soul and offers to wash his sins clean.

    Summary

"Ed finally saw why the club was called Bottoms as they were led into a larger room. There were rows of people with their lower halves on display, just ready to be fucked, their upper halves and faces hidden by what looked like some sort of private pod attached to a wall. Some were standing bent over, while others were laying down, their legs up in stirrups. The light was dimmed down to a soft glow, and there was music playing loud enough to muffle the sounds of skin slapping against skin, but not so loud that they’d have to yell to hear each other."

Ed's had a crush on his boss Stede ever since he started working for him a year ago. When he gets the perfect opportunity to get the crush out of his system, he takes it. He doesn't count on it being such a good experience that he can't stop thinking about it.

    Summary

Ed is an engineer aboard the Revenge, an interplanetary research vessel on a multi-year mission to study Jupiter's moon Europa. An accident requires that Ed awaken from cryostasis over six months early, and finds his only companion to be Stede, the ship's onboard AI. They develop an unconventional friendship, but is it possible to have more?

This is classic mutual pining with a sci-fi twist, inspired by all of my favorite stories about the nature of personhood.
    -----
“You–” Ed was struggling to parse what Stede was saying. “You’re playing your version of this song for me, right now? Like, in real time?”

“Yes, Edward, that’s correct,” said Stede softly.

Ed’s brain momentarily seized up. He supposed it made sense that Stede was capable of learning a set of rules to do something like arrange and play a piece of music. There was something unnerving about this song, though. It felt, well–it felt organic . Reactive. Almost collaborative in a way. Ed was lost in the push and pull of it, until the last notes softly petered out.

“So, what did you think?” asked Stede. It sounded nervous again. Why the hell would someone program an anxiety response into a bot?

    Summary

Stede and Ed's relationship ended months ago, but Stede hasn't been able to let it go. He's amazed when Ed agrees to participate in The Ex-House with him, sharing a tiny house on live television for six weeks to win the grand prize.

“Hello, Edward!” he says, forcing brightness. Remembers to look at his face - two seconds at a time is perfectly acceptable, look at the face, not directly into the eyes - tries to remember to turn his lips up into a friendly smile. Behind Ed, the door whooshes closed again and leaves them in silence.

Ed’s fully clad in leather, which is always a good look for him. Slight hint of eyeliner. One arm bare, showing off the winding snake tattooed into his skin. Beard trimmed short. Hair up, as well, properly styled. Small silver dagger earring dangling from one ear.

He looks unapproachably hot. The kind of guy that would skim over Stede without a second glance. The kind of guy that would sniff out Stede’s oddness in a second and push Stede down as a way to lift himself up. There are probably people watching on their televisions right now, wondering how the hell the two people in this room were ever together in the first place.

    Summary

"But something else beside the man’s cash box pulls his attention—something soft and odd and wonderful.
Stede darts toward it and gently picks it up.
    A fabric doll.
It’s unlike any doll he’s seen before—adorable and strange in the best way. Mismatched buttons for eyes. Long silver hair. A scruffy gray beard. He wears what looks like an old-fashioned white linen shirt, grayish beige breeches, grey stockings, and black, buckled shoes. There are little tattoos embroidered on his arm—tiny anchors, stars, skulls, and a snake, among others, swirls of thread meant to look like ink.
Stede hugs it to his chest without thinking.
    He loves it immediately."

When they’re young, Stede and Ed each get a doll that looks uncannily like the other—though they’ve never met. They grow up just a few miles apart, treating their dolls like best friends: sewing them tiny outfits, bringing them along on every adventure, and confiding in them like old friends. It’s sweet, a little odd, and maybe even a touch magical.
Years later, when Stede and Ed finally cross paths as adults, they’re struck by a strange, impossible realization: each of them looks exactly like the other’s childhood doll.
