Summary
There’s a book in the school library.
Ok, well there are many books in the school library. It is a library after all.
But there’s one book in particular that speaks to something deep inside of Jim. Something he can’t quite describe.
Jim swallows nervously, sweat dotting his brow as he stares at the book. It feels as if the world has stopped, as if it's holding its breath, waiting in anticipation.
Tension builds in the air, so thick Jim can almost feel it.
He plucks the book from the shelf, pulling it free from the cobwebs, and the world starts up again.

They know something happens, when a Robin steps down and another takes his place, his predecessor taking a new moniker and joining the shadows of Batman’s cowl. They know something happens, to turn someone ordinary into the sort of fighting machine that can stand against Superman.
There are rumors of operations, of surgeries and drugs, but they’re quickly discredited.
No, if there’s anything they know for certain about the Bats it’s that every last one of those masked faces is human, and all the more terrifying for it.

Tim is five years old when he drowns in his parents' pool. He dies quietly, waiting for parents who love him, but will never be there, to realise that something is wrong. They never show up, and he sinks into oblivion.
When he wakes up and claws his way out of the water, the sun has set, and the lights of his house are on. He is cold and wet and his lungs burn.
But most of all, Tim is alone.

Summary
An AU where Tim was imprisoned by Black Mask for most of his adolescence, trained to be his successor. His reintroduction to Gotham - and to Gotham's vigilantes - could go a little smoother. At least enough of his morality sticks around that he can probably consider himself safe from being a supervillain.
Though he isn't quite sure he qualifies for "superhero," either.
