Ryland Grace has officially lived on Erid for one whole year. Everything's set up to his liking. He has food, a lab, and his best friend who visits him on the daily.
Sure, he's the only human person here. But given his background, he doesn't mind suffering from touch-deprivation. He's safe right where he is.
Well, not for long. Now, there's a new guy. Who's pragmatic and flat when it comes to any form of expression.

Simon's last wish as his consciousness faded was for Eden and the consequences of the Quiet Rapture were to have never occured. He's not sure where he'd ended up but it had given him enough time to process some of what the hell just happened.
Meanwhile, aboard the Hail Mary, Grace and Rocky were parsing out Grace's food problem after a stroke of good luck while digging through storage, when a mysterious Blip appeared on the ship's radar.

Summary
Iron Lung crossover with Project Hail Mary because I discovered this and haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I've never had such a strong urge to write fan-fiction. I've only watched these movies, but soon I'll be reading Project Hail Mary. My science may also be... bad, but I promise I'll try to make it as good as I can manage.
This is set after Simon (The Convict) mutates and he survives (obviously because otherwise how would Simon and Grace meet). Grace and Rocky are on their way to Erid after Grace goes to save Rocky from the Xenonite-adapted Taumoeba, and they enter a dead zone on their journey. No stars, no light, and uneasiness fills them as they realize that some stars had already been consumed. They detect a strange moon, static-y distress signals transmitting from a ship on this moon. They encounter a terrible scene upon connecting with the ship, and Grace finds something unexpected.Bookmarked by Blue96Rose

It started out purely out of scientific curiosity. The staring, that is.
The mutations Simon endured, the teeth, the tongue, the extra bones, the scars on top of his radiation poisoning, the blood- it was all so fascinating, and Grace would always be a scientist by heart.
As they got to know each other over the weeks on Erid, it occurred to him that the staring might be strange, and he should probably stop. Simon would squirm when Grace stared too long, and ended up looking at him in turn until Grace got the hint and focused on something else. Above all else, he did not want to make Simon uncomfortable.
It was hard to keep this promise to himself however, because as soon as he'd first seen Simon in his harness framing his broad shoulders and firm, muscled chest, he knew he was a goner.

You ever see a fly endlessly bumping against a window so you open the window to let it out instead of just getting the swatter like usual. And it's all just on a whim?
So, anyway, Simon somehow finds himself floating in space after screaming at a giant eye in an endless red void.
Grace and Rocky are on the way to Erid when they come across an iron submarine with a dead eel monster hanging off the end.
Simon gets to heal, Grace gets to interact with another human again, and Rocky gets to watch the incredibly awkward courtship rituals of these two disasters (affectionate).

At first, there was nothing but static. For a few seconds, which might've been the longest seconds Grace had ever experienced, there was no comprehensible sound outside of the fuzzy feedback of an unstable connection. Grace furrowed his brow, trying desperately to make out something, anything at all.
Little by little, the signal cleared up enough to where he could just start to make out the sound of something...?
No.
Someone... Singing?
His heart rattled in his chest as the singing continued, suddenly keenly aware that he probably needed to say something. It'd been so, so long-
"Uh- Hello?"
Almost immediately, the singing stopped. Grace found himself missing it. Just a little bit. He stood with bated breath, hoping, praying that he hadn't scared the voice off. A clatter of something falling on the ground, heavy, clumsy thuds that sounded like heavy boots hitting metal, static...
Grace tried again. "Hello? Is anyone there?"
Then, clear as day,
'Hello...? Are.. who... who are you?'
(This story happens slightly before the events of Iron Lung, shortly after PHM)

Slowly, they get to know one another, despite Simon potentially being a war criminal from a moon with an ocean full of blood. Going through the report has his brain gears steaming. It's a lot. Logs of vessel depth, design and composition (iron mostly, with the other metal trappings of a human design with electrical cables), radiation output and source (x-ray and a buttload of it!), readings and scans of the biomass enveloping the vessel (a tree, of all things). More blood readings because the thing was utterly flooded with the stuff (same composition as the sample he coughed out, lovely to know and think about), and the final logs of the containment and quarantining of the vessel inside the Blip-A.
The team was coming back home to Erid, and in double time. Because Grace gets to the important part of the report. Perhaps the single most important one since he arrived on Erid.
They found another human inside the vessel.
