But, with no bugs in a quadrat and no prospective corpses on a morgue table, the creatures he was left observing were the colleagues who had become closer than family.

After he held Vincent’s hand for support, and he was sitting upright again with some effort, he asked, “Do you think our saintly dead come to us to remind us of our tasks?”
He seemed surprised, to have said it at all. But that happened often, when people spoke to Vincent; all his life, it had been so.
“I think our saintly dead come to us to remind us of their love,” Vincent said. He cupped Lawrence’s hands in his, close, to try to lend them some of his warmth.

Summary
“Ma’am,” the valet continues, coming to the left of Alice’s chair, “one item this morning addressed to Miss Goom.”
“Oh!” Alice says, startling and upsetting her tea into her saucer, “oh?”
Instinctively, she reaches to take the letter from the valet’s hands, almost dropping her cup in her hurry, heart suddenly thrumming in her fingers. It pulses through the thin paper in her hands, a slightly dirty and weather-stained envelope with a nonetheless clear return address in the upper left hand corner.
Froc clears her throat. “Alice,” she says, almost playfully, “we have a rule.”
