Summary

When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has glean'd my teeming brain...James and Manny were brought up on stories. Stories and music and sex and other things, but it was the stories that stuck. Stories of the lost past, just before they were born. Stories of fantasy, of the future – or at least what could have been the future, once. But stories... Stories are always in the eye of the beholder. The meanings and the characters are always what you make of them, and not always quite what you expect.
Archie's story just doesn't make sense. And worse, its implications – and the emphasis that other people give them – leave James questioning every fact and lesson he thought he knew of his own story. The one that he and Jake and Manny wrote together. But they can't tell that story anymore; the final chapter ended a long time ago. Except, of course, when they can – James just needs to work out exactly when that is, and remember just who the author was in the first place.
A sequel to the story Solstice, and a mystery as much of the self and society as of how Angelika Wojnowski came to die, and what Archie Stephens had to do with it.

Summary
Jake is a survivor. It isn't because he's special; it's just because he is. James is a survivor, too. Now, he and Jake are all the two of them have.
There's something else about Jake. Something he has known about himself since he was James' age. He loves James like his own child, for sure, but he also loves him in other ways. And now there are only his own rules to live up to, what on Earth does that kind of love mean, anyway?
James is little, but he's bright. He's growing up. Soon he will be twelve years old. The winters are getting worse, and he's old enough to make the trip to Jake's old family home, where they can survive the winter a little more comfortably than they have been up in the north. Everything is new to James. Everything is an adventure. How far will this path of adventure and discovery take James? And Jake, for that matter? As the nights draw in and the solstice looms closer, only the endless time they have between them will tell.
This story was originally published on Nifty as a series in 2019, and is re-serialised here as a remaster with additional material and commentary to follow once all chapters are re-released. Chapters will land each Monday.
