Kai had always heard tigers were solitary creatures. He'd heard the legend of the Zodiacs. He prayed it was just a legend. Then Nya gets kidnapped by Lord Garmadons' forces and it all becomes too real.
In other words; the canon rewrite au I've been thinking on for a while in which the ninja have to share their element with their zodiac counterpart and this makes all the difference in their worlds (also a crud ton of Kai angst, because you know me)

In other words: the ninja run across a threat unlike any they've ever faced, leaving one of their own in critical condition.

Kai glanced at Jay, who wouldn't meet his gaze, then back at Lloyd.
"What does that mean for us?"
Lloyd's brow rose.
"It means we're preparing to bring a Yokein Ambassador onboard."
In which: The crew gets their first mission, Lloyd is acting like a 'captain', then he's not cause he has a crazy fever and nothing goes right as everyone passes around space germs and Kai's just trying to keep everyone alive. Oh, and not frick up the mission in the process.

The kids in front of Jay do not look the way he imagined them to. The boy, Kai, is shorter than Jay, or maybe the same height, thin like a twig. Unhealthily thin. He has spiky brown hair and brown eyes, a scar cutting through the right one, and a purple bruise crawls over the left.
His sister, Nya, has lengthy black hair, also with brown eyes. She’s pretty, he thinks. She’s not as thin as her brother, but still a bit too thin. Jay, the shortest of his household, is pleased to see she is not as tall as him. Her skin is unmarred, and though she looks nervous, she’s smiling politely.
“Hello,” Jay greets, excitedly. He has two brothers, Zane and Cole, but he’s excited to have two more siblings, even if it’s temporary.

His hands were shaking. He was so scared to move.
The people in the car were freaking out. There was shouting, screaming, crying. People were moving frantically, looking around, digging under seats, trying to find the bomb. The small girl across from Kai was being hugged by her crying mother, but the girl looked far less scared. She was looking right at Kai, overflowing trust in her eyes, smiling, knowing that he was there.
“It’s…It’s gonna be okay,” Kai told her. He managed a smile, barely moving.
“I know,” the girl said. “My mom says you always win, so I don’t have to be scared.”
“Yeah. Your mom’s pretty smart.”

Or, Kai wakes up in a drugged haze to find himself on a crowded train that he didn't remember boarding, with a bomb strapped to his chest. Over the announcements, those on the train are given an ultimatum—kill the person wearing the vest, or the bomb goes off, killing them all. Kai, separated from his team, is faced with the same choice. Meanwhile, the Ninja race to shut it all down before the timer counts down to zero.

Summary
If Lloyd could have any wish in the world come true, he'd ask for everyone to forget he was the son of Lord Garmadon.
As the Green Ninja, Lloyd's element made him an empath, and when every person at his public high school hated his very existence, it became hard to focus when all he could feel was stabbing pain from their hate. His only relief came from the citizens he saved during his father's attempted conquests of the city.
Then his uncle decided to throw him a team of other Ninja who have no idea who he is, and he can actually make friends.
But how would they feel if he ever became unmasked?
