the apartment smelled like stale air and fresh paint, the kind of generic neutrality that came with every new rental. he dropped the boxes onto the bare living room floor with a thud, rolling his shoulders to ease the ache.

a faint thread of scent slipped through the shared wall vents, warm cedar, rain-soaked earth, and something subtler, like cinnamon lingering on the edge of a breeze. it curled into the room like smoke, wrapping around him before he could brace himself.
josh’s knees buckled.
he forced himself upright, shaking out his hands. new place. new start. he wasn’t here to lose control over some stranger’s pheromones bleeding through the vents. he had a life to rebuild, quietly, carefully, the way omegas in his position had to.
next door, in the identical apartment separated only by a thin layer of drywall and shared hvac, tyler joseph froze mid-keystroke.

“again,” tyler muttered, more to himself than to josh.
josh dun sat behind his kit, sticks resting lightly on his thighs, watching. he’d been watching a lot lately. not in a creepy way, just… noticing. tyler had always fidgeted. it was part of the package. the man could barely sit still long enough to eat a full meal without tapping out rhythms on the table or twisting a napkin into oblivion. but lately it had escalated. pens, picks, hoodie strings, the little plastic tabs on new guitar cables, everything ended up between tyler’s teeth.
chewed. clicked. gnawed on until the plastic was marked with wonky faint tooth impressions.
josh told himself it was fine. endearing, even. he was used to tyler’s quirks. they’d been doing this, making music, making a life out of it, for over a decade. but something about the sound lately, that soft, absent-minded click-click-click of teeth on plastic, was starting to short-circuit his brain in ways he didn’t understand and definitely didn’t want to examine too closely.
