It was important that Gai think it was all his own idea. It would just be too embarrassing if Kakashi had to admit to wanting that kind of thing in front of Gai.
In retrospect, he hadn’t fully thought this whole approach through.Kakashi gets a little too ambitious and pays the price. But it's alright, he doesn't mind the consequences all too much.

The thing about it is that, while some people grow into themselves, Kakashi is the sort of person who grew out of himself. He wasn't ever very good at being a child. Gai hadn't noticed it when he was a child himself, but now that he's got a teenage version of his rival on hand to compare with, he's starting to come to some belated realizations. It shouldn't be surprising; who really gets to be a child in a ninja village? But Kakashi was definitely worse at it than most.
He'd feel sympathetic, except for how the cocky little bastard keeps inexplicably hitting on him.
