    The words have barely left his mouth when something suddenly hits the floor hard. Steve whips back around so fast a muscle in his neck cracks.

    Bucky is on his knees, head bowed low enough to touch his sternum. His right hand is clenched in a tight fist as if he’s trying to hide how badly it’s shaking.

    For a long, horrible beat of silence, Steve stares down at him blankly, for a moment unable to process, unable to wrap his head around what Bucky thinks Steve wants from him.
