He expects Armand to wander into the kitchen at some point like an affronted cat and give Daniel one of those politely murderous looks of his, but he doesn’t. The house is deathly quiet. The staff have all long gone. Louis called this his coffin once—it feels like that now.

It's all so cliche: Boy meets vampire, vampire stalks boy, boy falls in love with vampire, vampire engages in torrid love affair with boy, boy asks to become vampire, vampire performs a lobotomy on boy, boy comes back fifty years later to ruin vampire's life, vampire turns boy into an undead creature of the night and fucks off into the ether.
Okay, maybe it's not cliche, but Daniel does feel like he's living in a bizarro-world rom-com.
Maybe it's not cliche, but Armand knew the second he lied to Louis, the second he erased Daniel's memories, that the bill would come due eventually.

Summary
Daniel is dying, and Armand can’t save him any more than he can save himself. He will not turn Daniel into the monster he is, he will not put an end to his misery by killing him gently, he will not sit beside him to watch him die. Armand is, at heart, a selfish creature.
Perhaps it’s that selfishness what makes him fall to his kneel before Louis, his companion, his victim, and beg him to turn the boy.

"You know Daniel had a terrible crush on you, back when you were busy playing at being a musician," Armand said, cards clicking against the table as he set them down.
Blood rushed through Daniel's face, up to the tips of his ears. Lestat had been sprawled out in his chair but at Armand’s words he sat up, rested his chin on his hand and fixed Daniel with the kind of stare that would have made the mortal version of him want to wither and crawl into a hole.
“Is that so? I wondered about that, actually,” Lestat said as he laid a card down and took a new one from the deck. No reaction to the card at all. Daniel wasn’t sure if he had an excellent poker face or if he was just so intent on staring a hole right through his soul that he’d forgotten to care about the game itself. “You were always giving me these funny looks back on Night Island.”
Daniel plays cards with Lestat and Armand. Gets dealt a bigger hand than any of them bargained for when Armand takes the two of them apart.

Daniel laughs, though there isn’t much humor in it. “That’s one fuckin’ word for it, sure.”
“Oh, mon ami.” Lestat’s eyes are round and wet like an animal’s. “A prize such as yourself does not deserve this terrible treatment.”
He shrugs. “You get used to it.”
“No.” Lestat grabs one of Daniel’s hands in both of his own, making such intense eye contact with the journalist that it starts to grow uncomfortable. “You deserve better. You must understand this.”
“Okay,” Daniel agrees, shifting a little in his seat. Anything to move past this point in the interaction. “I deserve better.”
“Good,” Lestat says, nodding resolutely to himself. “This is why you should let me fuck you.”

There’s just something so pathetic about the way Armand looks right now—the way he’s writhing in the rubble, pained and lethargic, like he’s genuinely struggling to move. Part of Daniel wants to stay and see how this pans out. Of course, the guy has just proven himself to be a legendary liar, so the whole “wounded animal” shtick could be total bullshit. Daniel could be two seconds away from having his jugular ripped out. So, another part of Daniel, the smarter part—the part that’s causing his heart to race and the tremor in his right hand to intensify—is telling him to listen to Raglan James for once and run!
But still, Armand really doesn’t look like he’s in any shape to pounce on Daniel and rip out his jugular. And the thing is… Daniel had another dream, the night he unearthed the horrors of Divisadero Street. Fragmented flashbacks. Nothing cohesive. Much like the ones he’d had of Armand tormenting him—although this one was perhaps even more unsettling.
