Seven didn’t really think about her destination, once she shot her way out of the bar and off of Freecloud. She didn’t regenerate, either, she just… went. She slept and woke in her pilot’s chair, pausing only to consume yet another flavorless ration bar, her movements nearly an extension of the ship running on autopilot to its heading. After days at high warp, she found herself arriving at what felt like the only possible destination there was.

“Have any of you seen combat?” she dares to ask. It was the first question she wanted to ask the moment she entered the room, the answer already clear in the nuisance of their house banners flooding the throne room, decorative feathers and jewels hanging from all of them. Peacocks among wolves.
They all stare at her with red stained cheeks. “Real combat,” Caitlyn clarifies when one of the knights begins to step forward, his stature of someone who’s barely seen the sun outside of a brothel. He steps back only for the nameless knight to take a step forward.
Caitlyn doesn’t recall closing the distance, something in the knight acting as a siren call to the princess. “You,” Caitlyn states simply. It isn’t a judgement or an accusation. But remembrance. The way her gloved fingers felt when taking the favor from Caitlyn’s hands, her helmet still hiding the whole of her face.
“The one and only, Princess” she quips quietly. She doesn’t bow her head as the others had when she met them at eye level. No. This knight raises her chin. Not in defiance but in something Caitlyn can only describe as a challenging reverence.
I dare you to choose me as I am.

She is the one who changes the bandages on Caitlyn for the time she is unconscious.
She is the one who props Caitlyn up, who gently unwraps the dirty bandages around her head, her eye– the one who carefully wipes the bruised, swollen skin. She can just barely see the stitches through her eyelids, is careful to not touch it directly. She is the one who gently grazes the bottom of the scar through her eye, the one who wraps a fresh bandage around the still-healing eye.
All the while, she softly sings under her breath, “Dear friend, across the river, my hands are cold and bare. Dear friend, across the river, I’ll take what you can spare.”
(There is no time to think when she is caring for someone else’s well being– there is no time to grieve when she has Caitlyn to focus on–)

“I actually kinda get that.” Vi said, her thoughts floating back to Stillwater, but choice was the last thing that she had when she was there. “Choice? Don’t you just tell them what to do? Give them commands and shit?” Vi had remembered the few times she saw some of the patrol dogs at Stillwater among the general population.
She’d only seen them a few times, but the guards barked commands at the dogs and they had responded to them or they got reprimanded.
Vi had almost felt solidarity with those dogs when she saw them.

Mary's begrudgingly impressed at the sheer lack of survival instincts this requires.

Beatrice can't stand still when she speaks on the telephone, it’s an old, anxious habit she picked up from a young age. When she ran away from home, everything she did was on her own - even when she moved to the ranch, Suzanne made Beatrice set up all of her own appointments.
At the time, Beatrice thought it was incredibly unfair to ask a seventeen year old to take on so much responsibility in a new life like that. She realizes now that what Suzanne was actually doing was preparing her for adulthood because she was going to treat her like an adult.
In hindsight, it was exactly what Beatrice needed and now she’s the one in her marriage that handles the phone calls.
Because for as much as Ava is outgoing and chatty and so easy to win everyone over, she is utter shite at speaking professionally on the telephone.
