The words bloom in midair above the alley mouth, ten feet tall and shuttering, a woman’s chrome-perfect smile frozen half a second too long. Her skin glitches between tones as rain passes straight through the projection, droplets turning into streaks of refracted light. Neon bleeds across the brick walls, pinks and sickly blues sliding over old graffiti and bullet scars.
Rain comes down hard enough to flatten the trash lining the alley, washing old blood into the gutter and making the pavement shine like oil. It drums against her jacket, slick and heavy, loud enough to almost drown out the distant sirens—almost.
