There’s a long silence. Trinity can hear the hum of the other person talking, but Yolanda is holding her phone to her ear, so it’s impossible to make out what exactly is being said.
It must be important, though, because Yolanda puts down the spatula and whispers, “Andrea.”
A beat.
“Creo que me estoy enamorando de ella.”
I think that I’m falling in love with her.

"We're separated," the woman said from the foot of the stairs. "So you're not a home wrecker, if that's what you're worried about."
Trinity looked back at the photo of two laughing kids on a lush lawn treating an equally laughing man like their jungle gym. A man who was unmistakably Dr Frank Langdon.
"That's, uh. Not what I was worried about," Trinity said.

“ if, perchance, you should grieve at all, let her not perceive it;
and laugh when, within yourself, you could have wept.
— Ovid, Remedia AmorisThe thing about the words we say, even the ones we mean to say, is that we can never really tell how completely they might unravel a life. And for Yolanda Garcia, who has built herself carefully around discipline, distance and the absolute refusal to need anybody at all, it only takes one badly timed sentence for everything to begin coming apart.

Yolanda pounced on her, pressing her face into Trinity’s neck. “It’s your fault. Making me donate all that money.”
Trinity laughed as Yolanda spoke against her skin. “Not my fault you fell for it.”
Yolanda buried her face deeper, making Trinity squirm and laugh at the sensitivity of it.
Trinity pushed her off, “Did they at least win?”
Yolanda let her head fall to the side. “Of course they didn’t.”
Trinity laughed harder. “Sounds like a horrible day.”
“Wasn’t too bad.”

Summary
It’s January, a few months into her intern year, and Trinity Santos is surviving the Pitt, her shared apartment with Dennis Whitaker, and whatever she refuses to call her situation with Yolanda Garcia.
The heater is set to sixty-eight. The apartment is too warm. Trinity is exhausted enough to send a text she would normally delete.
Or: the one where Trinity almost dies, Dennis saves her life, and Garcia realizes she was never as detached as she thought.

Summary
Trinity is at a bar.
After that shift from hell, it was the only sensible place for her to be — certainly not in an empty apartment waiting for Whitaker to get back from Amy’s. No. Trinity’s at a gay bar and well on her way to being drunk, mindlessly people watching from her seat in the corner, thoughts blissfully going no further than the lives of these strangers.
A businessman is walking in with his shoulders low, college kids are dancing, green-eyes is closer to the blonde than before, strangers around them are laughing, couples grinding, a group is doing shots near the floor, someone tired and alone is slouching into a bar stool with her head low and hair falling over her face-
Familiar hair. Usually pulled up off her neck in a bun. Always falling captivatingly into her eyes by the end of a shift.
The woman agitatedly shakes out her roots and looks up to flag the bartender, Samira Mohan’s face peaking out from behind the curtain.
OR
Trinity and Samira spend the night post-shift keeping each other company and cheering each other up (or trying to).

Memory can be funny like that. Trinity looks at her and remembers the Yolanda from months ago, sat across from her with a drink in hand, their knees brushing every time one of them leaned in to say something. The dim lighting of the bar had softened her eyes, painting her face into an expression that could almost be mistaken for the same longing that echoed inside Trinity’s chest.
A lot can change in ten months. Not all of it for the better.
