Robin is dying on the floor again tonight. A rib bone juts out of his sternum. Jason, older now, years later, hood tucked under his arm, rubs the side of his abdomen: phantom pain and sympathy.

“Help me,” Robin pleads, and like always, Jason pretends he hasn’t heard him.

Bruce’s mouth snaps shut, and from the look on his face, he is years away. And all of a sudden, Jason understands: Bruce has his own Robin, always over his shoulder, so content to haunt him, and so eager to die. In his father’s mind and his own, Jason realizes, he's never really left that warehouse at all.

Jason doesn’t talk to his dad anymore.

He doesn’t know why it only just hits him. He’s in the horror section of his favorite book store downtown. It’s his lunch break, and the shift lead likes him, so he gets a few extra minutes to window shop. He’d seen the new Stephen Graham Jones in the display case, an ominous orange red, a record needle stretching across a bleak expanse, and he’d gone in, listening to the far off chime of the door bell.

He’s just got it in his hands, the feel of the velvet dust jacket on his fingertips, the smell of warm pastry from the instore cafe, when it hits him.

Jason doesn’t talk to his dad anymore, and he hasn’t really talked to him in years.

“I was just a kid on the street.” Jason looks at Dick, really, really looks at him, face tense and crumpled in with the effort he’s making to get Dick to finally understand. “I coulda been anyone. I could have done anything. And now I’ll always be nothing but what you people turned me into. And I can’t walk two fuckin’ blocks without someone telling me I’m ungrateful.”

"Right, actually, scratch that - all of it's bad news for both of us, I'm just kind of used to the second part of the bad news. Anyway," he went on, when Su started to make sure she looked impatient, "the first part of the bad news is you're not going to believe me, and you're probably going to be really pissed off at me."

So last year, when Buell resident Demelza Delacroix died from—I’m going to quote the autopsy report here—from “blunt force trauma to the head and torso,” in your view that wasn’t murder?

Of course if you cherry-pick lines from an autopsy report it’s going to sound bad.

    Special mention to:

    Chapter 8:

He’s still waist-deep in his own gravedirt. He’s reading his own name, etched into stone.

“What,” he says, and then, “who?”

“Goose,” the man says. “I mean, Nick. Who are you?”

“Robin.” He heaves another few inches out of the grave, spits black dirt onto the grass. “Jason.”

    Chapter 19:

“Still open,” Bucky confirms. He steps around the bar, inclined to help, not sure yet how he intends to do so.

In one smooth, efficient motion, the man shifts, putting himself bodily between Bucky and the kid. His eyes move quickly, a neat one-two-three check of Bucky’s hands, his steel-toed boots, and the knife he keeps in his pocket for stubborn boxes. When his eyes settle again on Bucky’s face, there’s a focused wariness that Bucky doesn’t like.

    Well, he thinks. All right.

    Chapter 21:

People used to being powerful learn to fight these things head-on, but there’s a misdirection you only learn if you’re vulnerable. If you take enough punches to the face, you learn how to deflect the momentum. Get used to the taste of blood in your mouth, and you learn how to spit it out as poison.

    Chapter 24:

Probably all throughout history, some people were needed too much to be people at all.

Chapter 26: (sequel to chapter 8)

They aren’t friends. Nick doesn’t really have any friends here. He’s got a kid he’s been trying to look out for, and he has Dick, who’s somewhere between a friend and another kid, and he’s got Alfred, who keeps trying to adopt him, and then there’s Bruce. And he doesn’t know what the hell they are.

They’re co-raising a traumatized teenager, he guesses. And Bruce is doing a real piss-poor job of his half of it.

    Chapter 30:

“Sir,” Clint says, offended and disappointed. “Are you fucking kidding me right now?”

“Sorry, man,” the redhead says. “Really. I’m serious. It’s an emergency. I gotta borrow your car.”

    Special mention to:

    Chapter 2:

The headache pounding at his temples is really starting to bother him. He lifts his hands above his head, and jerks them down like Nat showed him. The zip tie on his wrists snaps neatly in half, and Roy claps like he’s done a magic trick.

“Nice,” Roy pronounces. “I just chewed through mine like an angry weasel.”

    Chapter 5:

If Lisa could shoot like this girl, maybe she would’ve lived. But Frank’s not sure, looking at this kid, that he’d make that trade. He used to think anything you survived was a win, but he knows better now.

    Chapter 10:

“No one ever tries to save me,” Deadpool says.

He says it in that way he says things sometimes, where the earnestness of his voice makes Jason want to punch himself in the throat, just to make damn sure no part of him ever tries to be so bizarrely, openly vulnerable. He says it like he knows he can come back from anything, that he’s going to live through whatever you do to him, so it doesn’t matter, here’s his heart, cut it up however you like.

    Chapter 16:

Jason shakes his head, but the grin lingers on his face. He can’t get rid of it. “You know, Doc,” he says, “if I were Red Hood, it might not be a good idea to ask. The guy wears a mask for a reason.”

    Chapter 22:

He’s pushing a boulder up a hill, and the boulder is his own bullshit. It’s his weakness, his flaws, his absolute inability to control himself for five fucking seconds. And the boulder will slip and crush him on its way back down, but the point is, right now, he’s pushing the boulder up the hill.

"I kill so others don't have to," Bruce states firmly and clearly. This entire situation didn't seem like it could get any more bizarre, what with Bruce sitting in the dark and polishing guns, but somehow it just has, "While you are here you will not kill."

Jason's throat is scratchy and dry with terror, but the insatiable feeling of being talked over and disregarded is a fresh wound. He can't back down from this if he tried, "I've killed. I still kill. Who the fuck do you think you are to stop me?"

Bruce gently sets down his gun, and picks up the blade beside him with practised ease. Jason's blood runs cold when the man wearing his father's face says, "You will die by my hand if you try."

"Last question," Bruce states, kneeling down in front of him.

"What are you to Bruce Wayne?"

The name sounds strange coming out of his mouth, even if it is his own. Jason finds it sounds as if it's been pushed out angrily, almost guttural. Batman doesn't move away, or rush him for an answer, but Jason imagines an invisible timer above his head, and the closer it gets to zero, the more likely Batman's going to stab him through the chest.

"He's my dad," Jason replies quietly, furious at the entire situation he's found himself in. Angry he's been put in a situation where he has to say something like that, even if it is the truth, in some way.

Dick crouches to be at Damian’s eye level, and his voice suddenly takes on a brisk tone, one Wally associates so strongly with being assigned patrol routes that he twitches. “Wally, this is Damian, Damian, this is Wally. Wally is one of my very best friends. He is very important to me. You aren't going to stab him. This isn’t a debate,” Dick says, when Damian raises an eyebrow, “Or a rule. You can’t physically do it. “Hm,” Tim says. “He’s- in school -,”
“On a Saturday? In July?” Tim makes a sound like a chipmunk in a trash compactor. “Tim, did you fuckin’ forget about the baby? Do not hang up on me-”
“Don’t real name me at work!” Tim squawks, panicked, and hangs up.

It comes down to this: he’s always been a little in love with Dick.

It’s nothing special. It’s like allergies, or oral herpes- a lot of people have them, and when they flare up it’s a mild hindrance on life until it dies down again. Just another uninteresting personal fact.

    Summary

Bruce, predictably, is saying nothing. It’s a very productive nothing, that is saying quite a lot, quite loudly.
“Go make that face somewhere else,” Dick tells him. “It’s not helpful.”
“I’m not making a face,” Bruce says, lying baldly.
“You are making a face,” Jason tells Bruce.
“It’s not my fault there’s a ghost,” Dick says, arms crossed over his chest like he wants to pout but knows he’s too old for it.
    “I know,” Bruce tells Dick.
“So stop making a face at me about the ghost!”
“I’m right here,” the ghost says.

The ghost goes flying back out of Bruce as Jason’s internal count hits the three second mark, ejected with such force it smacks into the back wall of the room with a non-sound that threatens to give Jason a headache.

“No,” the ghost says, pointing what could roughly be called a finger at him. “No!” The finger could equally roughly be described as shaking.

    “No what?!” Jason snaps.

“Something is wrong with you,” the ghost says urgently. It sounds like they’re breathing hard. “That- it’s not supposed to be like that. In your mind.”

“Are you crying?” Dick asks, high pitched.

“That’s bad!” says the ghost. “That’s really, really bad! I didn’t like that at all!”

They both stare at Bruce. “I’m fine,” Bruce says. Jason points at the ghost, who is still plastered against the wall like they need to be as far away from him as possible. “I don’t know what they’re upset about.”
