Summary
Cloud has never been anyone's favorite since joining the military, especially after someone from Nibelheim spread vicious rumors about him that convinced everyone he was a pathological liar. He's been keeping his head down and trying to wait out the time until his contract is up, but a certain SOLDIER commander takes one look at him and decides to change his destiny.
Genesis just needed someone who could keep up with him in battle and be his potions backpack, and Cloud just happened to be the right height to stay out of sight behind him to pass him an ether and hit him with a cure now and then. He doesn't understand why everyone else thinks Cloud is a worthless grunt, and determines to make his life better.
Neither of them planned to fall for one another.

Summary
Cloud’s been unabashedly staring at him, and it’s not like the man would notice. He’s enraptured in a book, a steaming cup raising to his lips occasionally. Long black hair is pulled back, wisps escaping here and there over the man’s shoulders, the shorter cut strands left to hang over his brow. He’s long-legged, thin, and even from afar Cloud can see how his skin cuts over his cheekbones and jaw in stark relief. Maybe it’s the shadow the man sits in, or maybe his eyes are simply set that deep, shadowed and flickering every time he goes from page to page with gloved fingers. A red scarf wraps around his neck. Everything else he wears is night-black. His face is the only bit of skin he’s showing, and it’s pale, nearly paler than Cloud.
He looks haunted. Cloud is unfortunately attracted to that.

Cloud doesn't do relationships. Too much energy he doesn't have, and why bother when hook-ups are easier? Or at least they usually are. Then comes a tall man with a deep voice, asking questions, whose haunted eyes keep finding Cloud. Now it's complicated.
