Summary
Robby didn’t expect his life to shift during a routine shift in the ER. And he certainly didn’t expect Dennis Whitaker, brilliant, chaotic, quietly observant Dennis Whitaker, to become the one person he can’t stop thinking about.
What starts as small rides home, little touches and stolen glances between patients slowly turns into something neither of them knows how to define.
They try to keep it quiet. They try to keep it professional. They are, for the most part, failing spectacularly.
Between late-night texts, nervous grocery store dates, a suspiciously intense game of “let’s pretend this is casual,” and friends who notice everything, Robby and Dennis are learning that maybe the hardest part isn’t falling in love, it’s admitting it out loud.

His mother says something like a name and she introduces the boy to him. Zayn isn’t listening at all. He is blatantly staring at the boy. He is broad, like... A lot broader than Zayn. All muscles running under his white t-shirt. He also wears his jeans so low on his hips, too low for his own good. A batman snapback rests on his head, hiding away dirty blonde hair cut very short on the sides. And his beard make Zayn wants to crawl under a bed to hide. The boy looks at Zayn with a smirk on his luscious lips. Zayn averts his eyes, looking at his mother instead and he makes a sound that he isn’t proud of, giving his mother a look that says that he wasn’t listening at all. His mother rolls her eyes and repeats
“Zayn, this is Liam, Karen’s son. He’s the one who’ll stay with you this week. He is on his spring break, aren’t you Liam?”
“Yes, I am, Mrs Malik.”
“So polite. But please, call me Tricia. And here is my son Zayn, I’m sure you will be great friends this week boys.”

Jack is earnest. It seemed to be his only other setting, when sarcastic wasn't available. It means that the words, no matter how corny to Robby's more than a little jaded ears, ring true. Annoyingly.
"This is a shitty midlife crisis," Robby says mildly, twitchy in opposition to Jack's stillness, but the other man can smell blood in the water.

Robby beckons Dennis with both hands. Dennis’ heart drops. His feet almost carry him forward across the rug, but he holds steady.
“Call me out. Fucking lay into me. I’ve earned it.”Dennis receives a call in the middle of the night. He picks Robby up, and their dynamic might change completely.
