Of course Ilya wasn't going to choose him.
And now, he stood in their kitchen like a stranger, having to pretend be okay with the fact that Ilya went out and hooked up with Svetlana on a night meant to celebrate hockey's greatest. A party he wasn't even invited to as a captain himself.
What a fucking joke.
He spent the entire day coming up with meticulous loopholes and justifications for something that was actually quite simple—nobody remembered. Shane was wholeheartedly forgotten and he was too proud, or maybe dense, to figure it out himself.
Or, the one where Ilya forgets Shane’s birthday. Coping ensues.

“Are you being serious right now?” Shane snapped his head toward him.
Hayden took a breath before responding, putting effort to change his tone. “Just— why don’t you come over tonight, Jackie and the kids would love to see you.”
“Maybe another time.”
Hayden was trying to communicate something without even knowing exactly what it was. All he knew in that moment is that he didn’t want Shane to go.
“So I guess this is where you lose to him and crawl on your knees for him all in one night.”

“Oh, c’mon! You don’t need a date night with Ilya. Without kids, every night can be date night. Jackie and I have been planning this outing for 3 weeks. I just forgot to call the babysitter until today, and now she is busy,” Hayden had that tone again. The one he used whenever talking about Ilya and Shane’s relationship. “Can’t you skip date night or move it to Montreal and take the kids with you?”
Shane wasn’t sure how to respond. His first thought was just to say ‘no’ outright, but he knew that would result in making Hayden mad at him. “How about Ilya and I check our schedules and try to come out to babysit next week? We have a few nights next week where we will be in Ottawa before we leave on the road for 4 games.”
Or Shane Hollander finally realizes Hayden is not a great friend.
