He didn’t know Harry, really. He doesn’t know why he’s paralyzed by the loss. He thinks, even in Revachol, even in this New New World and all its chaos and all its unpredictability, it is rare to encounter something—someone—entirely unique. Harry was entirely unique.
He tries again just to reach into his pocket. Every muscle in his body tells him no, stay, stare into the headlights, keep staring. He used to practice Volta do Mar when he was a teenager, to steer himself through situations he would’ve been trapped and consumed by. He tries to reach back for it, but instead he only finds the words AFTER THE WORLD, THE PALE.
(Harry dies. Kim returns, unwilling, to the moment he first woke him up.)

Summary
The Pale is an ever inscrutable force, pushing against any attempts at clear definition like a prey animal on its last legs. It scurries away from any mind that seeks to conceptualize, offering itself in the barest of echoes on its surroundings. Few are so brave as to travel it and among those who are, none make it out unscathed.
Many think of it as a destructive force, those people are wrong. The Pale does not create nothing, though it can at times be seen as such. It merely.. twists the objects already there. A particularly intuitive person might even prescribe a method to it, though a more sane one would understand the absurdity of such a thought.
Here, there are both, twisted against each other, torn apart to be made whole again in an entirely wrong way.

Tucking his arms behind his back, Kim leans over the rat, only a little weary and frustrated. It is quite cute, with its twitching nose and little hands. He distantly wonders if there's another rat around somewhere.
TRIVIA – After all, rats are social creatures, much like humans.
SACRE COEUR – They get terribly depressed without a friend.
"Hello, cher petit rattie. Do you know where the detective from the 41st is?"
Look at him, talking to a rat of all things-
["Is that me? Are you looking for me?"]
Kim jumps, suddenly hearing a voice, as if it is speaking to him directly inside his mind. Deep, raspy, like whoever it was had been smoking a pack a day. A bit of a Messinian accent. Kim looks around the room, but there isn't anyone else, just the rat.
He stands up on his hind legs, sniffing the air. ["Um, down here."]
No. No way. "Erm... Petit rattie?"
["Yes! That's me!"]
"You're... You are a rat."
["I'm aware. But I'm also a police officer. I think?"]
Kim sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. "It's the stress, I'm finally losing it..."
