The idea circled Rui’s mind like a lazy boat floating in the sea. Wouldn’t discussing it make things complicated, awkward? Nene could look at him in utter contempt after he admits he has these kinds of feelings for her. Pessimistic? Probably, but Rui wanted to believe he was being realistic.
He observed the dark ceiling, eyes unfocusing until everything began to blur. Imagining these stars connecting, moving apart, blinking in and out—if someone were to catch him right now, they’d think of him deranged. Then, two stars formed. Very bright stars that seemed to inch closer to each other, until one began to fade, which the second one followed. Slowly, they drifted away.
Who was he to ruin the friendship? People broke up for pettier reasons, and friendships are so fragile. Maybe he was already walking a fraying tightrope.
Nene gets confessed to by a classmate. Rui gets jealous.
