Summary
She is between the third and fourth song. The particular two minutes of a show that belong only to her — no one's eyes on her yet, the stage dark, the crowd in that suspended state of waiting that has its own quality of noise. She knows exactly where Mira is. She does not look. She knows by the architecture of the wing, by the weight of the room, by five years of understanding where Mira stands without needing to confirm it.
Then the sound.
It is brief and specific and she does not know how she knows what it is except that she does, instantly, completely, the way the body sometimes knows things it has not been taught. She turns before she decides to turn.
The wing is wrong.
There is movement where there should not be movement, a figure that does not belong, and then — already, in the time it takes to draw breath — something on the floor. She knows before she sees clearly. She knows from the shape of it, from the way the crew is moving, from the particular stillness at the center of all that motion.
Mira.

Summary
"C'mon Mir, where is it? Let me help." she murmurs, pressing her face close to Mira's so she can hear her.
"Back." she rasps, groaning as Rumi turns her gently to see.
Zoey finishes up with her demons. She's always liked to play with her food, but she seems to understand the severity of the situation well enough. She skids up to them at the base of the tree as Rumi rucks up Mira's top revealing the four nasty claw marks gouging her lower back. Zoey whistles lowly.
"This is gonna suck"
"Yeah" Rumi breaths.
Demons are venomous, the girls should probably talk, and Zoey's right. This is gonna suck.

Summary
Mizu was hired. At first Akemi’s fury was incandescent. This was not the desired outcome. She tried her father again, and her father said, “Isn’t this what you wanted?”, and she fumed, teeth clenched, face hot. She tried to sneak out and Mizu caught her, grabbed her by the back of the neck—literally, the back of her neck, squeezed until it hurt. Pushed her back toward the house. Akemi screamed, “You can’t treat me like that!”, and Mizu, cold and soulless, said, “Like what?”, and Akemi said, “Like I’m a dog!” And Mizu said: “Can’t I?”

Mizu is hired as Akemi's bodyguard. Akemi takes offense.

Summary
There is noise first. There is always noise at these things. Crowd noise, production noise, the low thrum of bass through a floor she has been standing on for three hours. She knows this floor. She's walked every inch of it.
She's on it now, differently.
The sequence of events is difficult to locate from this angle. There was the wing. The credential that was wrong. The man standing where no one with a legitimate pass would stand. There was the glint — metallic and catching the stage light for just a moment, the way things catch light when they're being raised and aimed, and she has been trained to see exactly that and nothing in her hesitated —
Then the floor.

For five years, Mira has kept Rumi safe from a careful professional distance.
The distance ends on the floor of a concert venue with thirty thousand people gone silent around them.

Summary
Mira learned how to be invisible before she learned how to write her own name.
She learned it in the way her mother’s eyes glazed over whenever she entered the room, only to sharpen with venom if she lingered too long. She learned it in the way her father’s suitcase was never fully unpacked, always halfway to gone. She learned it in the way her brother, the golden boy, never said her name unless it was to tattle, to scold, or to spit it like a curse.
She learned it in the silence between dinner clinks and the muffled arguments behind closed doors, in the cold rice that waited for her after everyone else had eaten. In the echoing thud of her mother’s voice slurred over soju:

Another year of living… Yay.
Was that something she’s supposed to be happy about? Well, society says it is. A Huntrix birthday is always heralded when fanfare, but it seems contrived… especially since growing up, it wasn’t something her parents ever celebrated beyond some simple acknowledgement that she’s now x years old, and now that she’s older, she should be doing ‘x.’
It was never anything special, and she doesn't feel the need to start caring now.
Mira's birthday falls on the weekend, and she isn't interested in celebrating. In the Kang family they just never did.

Celine knew every version of Rumi's face.
She had not seen this face in a very long time.
Dazed. Somewhere else entirely. The face of someone who had been ambushed by something and was still standing in the middle of it. Something in Celine's chest moved, quietly, the way it did when she was not expecting it to.
"Rumi," she said.
Rumi looked up. Something reorganized itself — the dazed quality retreating, the familiar Rumi assembling in its place. She straightened.
"Hey," she said. "You're back."
"I am." Celine came behind the bar. Looked at the scarf without appearing to. "Mira forget that?"

Summary
Mira claps her hands. Begins to say, Let's take a break, lifting her leg.
She had once read a book where the main character, in the middle of dying, had addressed the reader. Asking for help. Begging for it.
She had kept reading, stuck in this liminal space of being both a person and an object. Like the impermanence of an airport or a trainstation, knowing you were looking at the space between two sides of a window, encapsulated in the gap of the inbetween, blurry and untouchable. Watching yourself through the glass, observing your decisions and mouthing commentary like the subtitles of a movie.
That's how it feels stepping backwards and hearing an insistent pang

Summary
Moving in together was meant to be the mark of new beginnings. To separate from their home units and learn how to become someone away from the families they grew up with.
It didn’t take long for Mira to start to feel the tendrils of a new illness take her.
She’d known sickness well from a young age, and there was no denying that it’d influenced her decision to pursue a career in the medical industry, but even this was far out of reach for her. The moment petals began to accompany her spittle, she knew there was something drastically wrong with her. Yet, no amount of research or doctors appointments could ever grant her the answers she so desperately needed.
So life continued on. They weaved around each other through thick and thin, helpless as they watched the slow deterioration of Mira’s health.

Summary
When Mira impulsively tells her family that Rumi is her girlfriend, she doesn’t expect them to take it seriously, let alone demand that she bring Rumi to her brother’s wedding. Now they’re flying across the country together, sharing a hotel room, holding hands in public, and pretending to be a very convincing couple for one long, awkward, auntie-filled weekend.
As long as they stick to the plan, everything should be fine. Mira just has to make sure that her very real feelings for her best friend don’t ruin things.
What could go wrong?

Rumi sighed, unfolding her legs as she rolled over onto her back. “I just feel so…behind,” she said. “I mean, Zoey’s known she was bi since she was a kid. I’m twenty-four…aren’t I supposed to know this by now?”
The brush of fingertips against Rumi’s open palm was featherlight, but it was enough. Against her better judgement, Rumi turned her head to look up at Mira. Behind her glasses, Mira’s eyes were bright, and Rumi could not help but sit up to meet them properly. Something fluttered inside Rumi’s chest, sending a hot ripple down Rumi’s Patterns. But this wasn’t new, no, this just what it’s like to be around Mira. It always had been.
It always had been.

Summary
The sheet of golden silk fills Mira’s vision, a shimmering trap that promises a swift end to any unlucky bug that wanders into it. At its center, a spider perches, legs poised, ready to strike.
It’s not a new sight for her. The shaman spiders congregate in the yard every summer, spinning massive tangles of yellow silk to decorate the sky, and it’s nothing short of breathtaking.
Mira loves the spiders themselves even more than their webs, though.

Summary
Objectively, Mira is many things. Jack-of-all things mechanical and tech. Lone occupant of a ghost town with a near hundred percent mortality rate. Once a hundred years ago, once two years ago.
She's rebuilt her life before. Another challenge is pretty much second nature to her.
With a new map, a potential new lead to getting one step closer to achieving the most important goal in her new life, she finds herself below the ruins of a science institute, with the breathing body of a woman from before the end of the world.
The message left from the people from the old times is another burden to bear. What they want from her. What she wants from her. She can't provide.
She's not a lifeline, no matter what the starry-eyed woman may make her believe.

Oh, and she's half demon, apparently, and now they're bound together by patterns that keep them from being too far from each other.

Summary
Rumi sits hunched forward with her elbows propped on her thighs, staring down at her clasped hands. She catches movement at the edge of her vision and looks up at the same time as everyone else in the hospital’s waiting area. They all collectively hold their breath as a woman wearing scrubs approaches, but she passes between a set of double doors without speaking to anyone. Everyone settles back uneasily in their chairs and Rumi hangs her head, pulling the hood of her sweatshirt just a little tighter around her face. It’s only been three months since Huntrix debuted and this is the last place their fans would expect to see them, but she doesn’t want to risk getting recognized. The idea of signing an autograph right now makes her want to throw up, and she couldn’t bear answering any questions about why they’re here. But so far, no one has paid any attention to her or Zoey, letting them blend into the dozens of other anxious family and friends waiting for news of their loved ones.
