When he and Stack first get to Chicago, he curses Annie. It’s silent, only in the recesses of his mind, but it burns him as he says it. Burns his spirit—a thing he doesn’t know if he truly has anymore—something fierce, and he immediately takes it back. He then curses himself, curses the day he was born.
