Summary
In the new timeline, Yao and Ilyukhina have survived their comas. Grace is happy that they’re alive this time around, but having to answer to Yao is causing problems, because unlike Grace, Yao doesn’t trust Rocky. Grace has to convince his crewmates to let him and Rocky become friends this time around, all the while hiding that he’s a time traveler who has lived through the Hail Mary mission already, and that he knows both Earth and the crew have a chance to survive.
This is a fleshed out part of one of the possible endings of Time Travel Makes Perfect , a short story sketch I did examining what might happen if Grace time traveled back from his life on Erid to the first day Stratt recruited him to study Astrophage, so you can check that out if you want more context, or to find out about the fic that was my original inspiration for this.

“Grace staring at Simon again, statement,” Rocky, very unhelpfully, broke his train of thought. Grace sputtered, shaking his head.
“I’m not staring, Rocky! I was just – spacing out,” Simon worried his lip, looking back down at his research. Glancing back up to see if Simon had overheard. If he had, that didn’t stop him from continuing his own work; Simon had become obsessed with the mechanics of the ship, fixing everything he could. Which was great, considering Grace was a man of science himself. Hardly knew how to change his tires, really. Simon paused, scratching at the gills on the side of his neck. He had been doing that every few minutes, grimacing.
“Simon, are your gills bothering you?” Grace couldn’t help himself.
“So you were staring then, angel?” Simon huffed, not taking his eyes away from what he was working on.

When Ryland awoke from their coma so long ago, their chances of meeting another human had dwindled to zero.
Or. Almost zero. Because here was another human.
And, unfortunately, this human was one of the most beautiful people Ryland had ever seen. Especially as her skin healed from the chemical burns and scrapes, and her natural complexion returned, Ryland found it harder and harder to keep their eyes off her during visits.
It was no bueno. The stranger hadn’t even opened their eyes or said one word to Ryland, and here was Ryland, nursing puppy-love like they were a teenager again. It couldn’t be more pathetic.

Grace's webbed hands press against the glass, his curious chitters surprising the young man standing next to the viewport he was observing from. He’s newer on the team, Grace jogs his memory for his name again.
The young man holds his hand to his chest, breathing a sigh of relief, “Oh hey, Grace. Come to see your new neighbor?”
He nods, chirping his burning question, “Who is it?”
“Dunno,” Chris, right, that’s his name– “It’s another mer.”
(Or, Rocky and Adrian are helped by a merman named Grace, and in turn they save him. Now happily living in the Erid Marine Rehabilitation & Research Center, Grace is surprised when another injured merman named Simon is brought to recover in a neighboring tank. Perhaps, these two lost souls may finally have a home, together.)

Currently being brain rotted by Project Hail Mary and BloodyMary so…. Here, I guess.
Simon doesn’t expect to be rescued; hell, he believes he’s already dead. He doesn’t even think he deserves to be rescued.
But suddenly he’s being pulled from his bark resting place and rescued by two rocks and…. What seems to be a completely normal man.
Note: because this fic includes sexual content, I feel the need to be very clear: yes, both characters are on the aro-ace SPECTRUM, but both feel sexual and romantic attraction to ONE ANOTHER; this is not to say that that is true of everyone on the aro-ace spectrum, for many if not most aroace people they will never experience attraction, which will not change when they “meet the right person” and this fic is NOT TO DISCREDIT THEIR SEXUALITIES!! these two specific characters, as I see and write them, experience attraction and desire for one another. For Grace, he has never experienced sexual attraction (nor true romantic attraction) prior to Simon, and for Simon, he is grey-aroace and has experienced attraction and desire briefly but infrequently before meeting Grace, at which point he begins experiencing both frequently specifically towards Grace.

Grace and Rocky encounter another human on their journey back to Erid and it goes something like this:
“Oh sorry that’s kinda rude of us, right? Rocky is an Eridian from the planet Erid. I’ve been learning to be more fluent in the language, full immersion usually works best, at least according to linguistics, and-"
“Grace rambling. Note: Human act stupid around potential mate.”
Grace’s face flushed and he shoved at Rocky’s ball while the man cocked his head to the side, fully confused by the whole sight.
“Shut up, man,” he hissed at his best friend, making Rocky cackle.
“Again, I’m sorry! Look, we haven't met anyone else out here for ages. You’re kind of a miracle to us.”
“You’re kind of an angel to me,” the man then said, voice rough.

Simon believes he's hallucinating. That the man he keeps seeing and the pristine ship he repeatedly finds himself in aren't real. That that monster is fucking with his head.
Grace believes he's got a lot more on his plate than just the fate of the earth, and he's not sure which task is more impossible: stopping the astrophage without any memories, or saving one man in another universe.
OR
By getting yanked between universes, Grace gets to experience the horrors, Simon gets to save the stars, and Rocky gets two (2!) humans for the price of one.
