He placed the file folder down on the desk, two hands placed on top, as if to stop Ilya from reaching out and opening the file to find the results himself. “I hope you had some good rest last night.” Ilya wanted to reach across and shake the man. Instead he just made a face of agreement. “I have your results now if you’re ready.”
Ilya wanted to scream. “Yes. I am ready,” he said in a managed voice instead.
Mr. Carter, sighed, then opened up the file. “Mr. Rosanov, the results yesterday concluded with 99.99 percent certainty that you are in fact the father."

This is the offer Shane, a vampire unable to hunt due to psychological trauma, makes to Ilya, a young who attends a suicide support group and feels he has already lost everything in life.

Healing is everything. I love this story. Definitely in my top 5 here. I can’t forget it.
Favorite lines:Ilya remained kneeling in the exact spot where Shane had left him, in the center of the dining room that was supposed to have been the stage for their new beginning.
Shane Hollander had achieved professional success, with a perfect, clean, and stable life. And he was completely lonely.
He believed the space beside him had been molded for a single person, and since that person was gone, the place would remain empty forever.
But the chronicles didn't tell the story of a winner. They overflowed with a guilt so palpable and a regret so dense that, now knowing who had written them, Ilya felt an excruciating pain pierce his chest.
Sometimes," Ilya continued, taking a step toward Shane. "Hearing from the person who broke your heart that they are sorry... isn't enough. My apology for what they did to you wasn't enough for you to forgive me. And your apology today... this is not enough."

"Hi, coach," Hollander said softly. "Sorry, I'm late."
"What's that even taste like?" Ryan asked skeptically.
"Porn," Ilya said without hesitation.
"I- what?" Ryan stared at him.
"Almost sex, but not as good," Ilya explained.
