Summary
Seven years ago, Elphaba and Fiyero faked their deaths and disappeared into exile, leaving Glinda behind to rule Oz alone. Now, they returned.
But Glinda is not the woman they remember. The warmth beneath her smile has vanished, replaced by cold composure, guarded silences, and a distance neither of them knows how to cross. To Oz, she is a beloved ruler. To Elphaba and Fiyero, she is almost a stranger now.
As they are drawn back into her life, they begin to see the cracks beneath the perfect image: a child, they didn't know about, a worsening illness, carefully buried secrets, and seven years of pain Glinda refuses to name.
They came back expecting to find the woman they left behind. Instead, they find someone who learned how to survive without them.

That is the thing Elphaba keeps coming back to, afterward, in the narrow hours when she can't sleep and the Emerald City hums green outside her window. She had been ready. Her whole body had been oriented toward it, toward the fire and the fight and Fiyero's hand and the sky opening up ahead of her like a door.
And then Glinda had looked at her.
And she had come down.
Or: what if the Wizard and Glinda did convince Elphaba to stay. And what if Elphaba starts to see exactly what Glinda has been surviving, deliberately, so that Elphaba could come home safe.

Summary
Elphaba isn’t interested in the Emerald City’s glittering social season or the machinations of its marriage market. Galinda, still reeling from a family tragedy, is just trying to shepherd her sisters through their first social season, marry her best friend, and restore her family’s finances. She’s not expecting the Queen of Oz to start courting her younger sister, or to have to spend so much time with Nessa’s prickly older sister, Princess Elphaba. At first, Galinda is happy to pretend that she's exactly the kind of brainless socialite that Elphaba thinks she is. But as first impressions fizzle out and she realizes the two of them are more alike than she could ever have suspected, Elphaba threatens to send Galinda’s carefully constructed facade spiraling and forces her to consider another path: one where they put their own happiness first, whatever the consequences.
