His heart feels like it’s beating a hundred miles an hour. Eddie groans from the sofa Steve has decanted him on. Nancy and Robin are both trying to bandage him up as best they can, Dustin fluttering anxiously nearby.
Nancy’s practiced hands are skilful, looping lengths of ripped t-shirt around Eddie’s torso and legs and fastening them tight. Blood blooms through the cotton in deep red rosettes.
It’s not until Steve actively looks up - at the trailer’s non-pulsing, non-squelching, perfectly gate-free ceiling - that it hits home.
The gate is closed.

“I’m fine, Eddie. Really.” Steve says.
“No, you’re really not, Harrington,” Eddie reverts back to Steve’s last name like it’s some kind of shield. “Prepare to get aggressively cuddled.”
He kneels onto the bed with a smile, but Steve stops him with a hand on his thigh. He feels the heat of Steve’s hand through the rips in his jeans. He wants. He always wants too damn much.
“At least take your pants off first, Munson. Who cuddles in denim, honestly?”
Steve has nightmares. Eddie cuddles him for comfort. It's just what friends do.

Summary
When Steve gets blindsided by a migraine, Eddie helps him through it with gentle guidance and soft touches. It’s no surprise when, on the flipside, Steve can no longer bring himself to hide the feelings he’s been harbouring for years and Eddie finds another way he can take care of Steve.
“I’ve got you, baby.” Eddie whispers, and Steve feels the phantom touch of lips on his temple again, only this time he’s certain that Eddie has pressed the ghost of a kiss to his skin. If Eddie keeps this up, keeps calling Steve baby on top of it, Steve might start crying in the state he’s in. It’s either that, or grabbing Eddie by the collar of his shirt and kissing him until neither of them can breathe.

He reaches out, soft and slow- the way you approach a wounded dog. Don’t bite me, his hands are saying- I want to show you gentle touch.
