Summary
"I don't get why it's such a big deal," Julia says. "If you ask me, Eliot seems like the kind of guy who'd think it's flattering that you're having sex dreams about him."
And, well. Quentin's not sure that Julia's wrong about that, but he's feeling vulnerable enough without having to contemplate Eliot's inevitable condescension. Not to mention the fact that— "These aren't just sex dreams, Jules. They're like. Visceral. Like, they feel completely real right up until I—" Come. "—wake up. They're detailed. Graphic. It's like I'm— I'm basically sexually assaulting my friend in my sleep."
"Yeah?" Julia pops another cereal flake in her mouth. "And?"

Summary
Quentin shook out the tension in his hands. He didn’t understand why it wasn’t getting any easier. For days on end he’d been trying to perfect the illumination spell the rest of his fellow First Years had nailed in a matter of hours. But no matter how he tried, Quentin couldn’t seem to make anything more than a spark.
He didn’t know what was worse: that his discipline was apparently shit at magic, or that he’d been placed in the Physical Kids’ Cottage with his ex-whatever-the-hell-they’d-been-in-undergrad because the administration didn’t know what else to do with him. He couldn’t do shit about the latter, but he figured he could at least try and get the basics of magic down before Dean Fogg realized what a grave mistake he’d made in allowing Quentin into Brakebills to begin with.
OR
The one where Quentin and Eliot are exes who had an intense D/s relationship in undergrad.

Summary
Eliot is staring at Quentin’s feet, the shadows of the hallway making it look like he’s at the end of a long, dark tunnel that he’d clawed his way up to get to this bedroom. “Yes, I did. After I was able to get out of bed and... walk and you were finally awake for longer than an hour, I went to see you.” He leans against the doorway again, his hands in his pockets, eyes moving from Quentin, to the window, and then back. He clears his throat - “You didn’t see me. And I- what I wanted to say- I couldn’t… and it was cowardly. I should have just talked to you, but I ran instead.”
What I wanted to say…
“What did you want to say?” Quentin asks softly.
“Why didn’t you say it?” he almost whispers, his eyes gazing up at Eliot.
Eliot looks at him and whatever he sees in Quentin’s eyes seems to break him even further, and a choked sob escapes. He runs a hand over his face and says, “You had Alice.”
Quentin swallows.
“I wanted you.”

Summary
Margo winced. “We’re all out of rooms.”
“I thought you had extra space here.”
“Space, yes, rooms, no.” Margo seemed to sense his mounting panic and put a reassuring hand against his cheek. “Don’t worry, Q, we’re not going to throw you out. Eliot has the biggest room in the house-” Of fucking course he does. “-so you’re just going to room with him for a while.”
__ __
Quentin is forced to share a room with Eliot, which would be fine if it wasn't for his giant crush.

Summary
They hadn’t been in the castle a day when it was announced that Eliot was expected to marry. Some superstition about an ancient curse on the throne that only marriage could break. Eliot’s High Council seemed entirely unwilling to chance it, even if it definitely sounded like bullshit. It could be anyone of his choosing, but no High King in the history of Fillory had reigned unmarried for long.

Summary
Margo barges into his room on the eve of day ninety, glares at him with a trembling jaw and says, “We’re going to save Quentin Mother Fucking Coldwater from the other god damned side, and you are going to help us.”
He blinks owlishly up at her, before the words finally register and he scrambles so he’s sitting upright in his bed, wincing only slightly along the way. “What?” He asks. “How? What?”
“I’ve respected your mourning period because I’m a great fucking friend. But Julia and Josh and Penny and I have taken this as far as we can. It’s your turn.”
She looks kind of angry, and he’s just. He’s confused.

Summary
Eliot, after everything.
The apartment was just as they’d left it; mid-afternoon light streaming through the high windows, the last pair of flats that Margo had exchanged for heels askew by the door. Four plates with dried out muffin wrappers still sat on the counter. Eliot stared at them for a moment before he scraped them into the trash and took the half-empty bag to the chute.

Summary
Eliot keeps vigil.
"You need to understand that he - he did this for us, for everyone. He had to take a risk and it worked, but he was hurt real bad, El. He’s - I can’t honestly say that he’s okay. He’s still out."
Eliot took a moment to process this information, that Quentin was hurt, which meant he was nearby, but he wasn’t all right, which meant in some ways he was not nearby, and in some ways he was becoming less nearby by the second, and every moment Eliot was laid up and not closer to him was a waste because what if he was never nearby again?

Summary
Quentin Coldwater, high-fantasy wunderkind and eternal sucker for a good hero, only needs one thing: to finish the last book of his trilogy.
Eliot Waugh, genre-busting enfant terrible and antihero (at best) of his own not-so-thinly-veiled life story, doesn’t need anything at all.
A middle-of-winter book tour reveals, one snow-covered city at a time, that there may be something else they both (desperately) need. If only they can let themselves have their own happy ending.
