17 year old Adrien was no stranger to bad luck. After all everything good in his life generally came packaged and wrapped with a bow of misfortune. The one year anniversary of his mothers death came and went and he never even saw his father. His fathers assistant Natalie was the only soul he saw that day. He counted himself lucky on the days his father decided to deign him with his presence.
His mother was a beacon of love and light in his quiet desolate life. His parents may have never let him attend college or lycee but at least they had loved him. That is until his mother died. It was like her death had closed any avenue between them and Adriens luck just kept on waning.
So maybe he should have known better. He should have known that his streak of happiness and fortune would run out just as quickly as it came. That, of course when his father finally allowed him some freedom it would lead to the night he died.

And all of that was why, on their seventeenth day on Mars, Buck had shoved Eddie out of the way during the emergency evacuation, knowing it meant his own death instead of Eddie’s. Buck trusted Eddie to help get everyone else home, and Eddie had someone to go home for. Someone who needed him and loved him. Someone who Buck loved, even without ever meeting. He wasn’t going to let Chris grow up without a father. So in the split second he had to think after seeing the communications dish flying at them through the storm that was chasing them off the planet fourteen days early, he’d pushed Eddie out of the way, hoping like hell it would be enough and knowing he wouldn’t live long enough to find out.
