    "Are you here to die, soldier?" he had asked her when they landed on a branch high out of the titan's reach — his steely gaze boring into her for the first time, his voice low and stern. Immediately she was struck by him, how everything about him was stern and unyielding — a steady place to land after all this time adrift.

    "N—no," Petra stammered, the answer coming almost immediately — instinctively. She never realised it before, always thinking she would welcome death when it came with the face of her mother and a warm embrace. But the face of death was not her mother, it was not warm and loving — it was the cold, uncaring face of a titan, and Captain Levi had saved her from it, in more ways than either of them could know in that moment.
