Shane and Ilya work well together on the ice, but there is no confusion that they aren't fans of each other. Shane is constantly fed up with Ilya showing up late and not taking things as seriously as him. Ilya likes to tease him, but he always puts his all in during games. It’s been like this since they started two and half year ago.
Midway through the fall semester, Ilya takes a bad hit and is taken off the ice during the game. Shane comes up with an unorthodox solution to fulfill Ilya's physical needs while he recovers, and Shane's academic needs for extra credit.

The director called him again, and he shook his head, the photos blurring. Whatever. It would have to do.
He clicked "select all," then the messages icon, then Rozanov's name. Hit send.

Summary
The Swiss National League doesn’t care about the legendary Hollander-Rozanov rivalry. When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.
Then the lockout ends in January, and it’s time to go back. Back to different countries, cities, lives. Beds.

Shane’s immediate reaction is to say that he doesn't know when it started. He doesn’t know who his soulmate is. “Look,” Shane began, hitting the edge of the basin with the flat of his palm. “I don’t know if I did something to piss you off, or…or what, but you’re being fucking weird. The phonecall? And this? What is this?”
Before he’d even really processed Shane’s words, Ilya was standing directly in front of him, grabbing his lapels, pulling him closer. Then his shoulders sagged and their foreheads met. Ilya could feel Shane shift, moving away, but Ilya kept him still. It felt so good just to have Shane near again. “You would not believe me,” Ilya murmured.
Shane let his shoulders slump in acquiescence. He gave a little shrug. “I’m already having a tough time believing that you’re acting like this.” He laughed weakly, and Ilya envisioned what it would be like to tilt his head just slightly and press his lips to Shane’s. Would he reciprocate? Pull away? The latter. The latter. Obviously.
Or, after Ilya takes the girl from the club in Montreal back to his hotel room, he falls asleep wishing that he and Shane had never been anything at all, and wakes up to a world in which that’s true.

In 2023, Shane takes a bad hit on the ice. When he wakes up, the last thing he remembers is a tuna melt.
There’s a lot to get used to.
