Okay, so if it wasn’t obvious this is a Re:Zero fanfic! I’ve loved Re:Zero for a really long time and I honestly don’t know what the fic sphere is like in this fandom, but I need to scratch an itch so I'm writing this. I got inspired by what’s going on in season 4, but I don’t plan for this fic to have season 4 spoilers. But there will be spoilers for season 1, 2, and 3 (up to arc 5)! So be warned!

If someone had asked Subaru what he thought of Julius before his fight against the Archbishop, Subaru would have proudly answered with a wide grin and a string of insults aimed at the man he despised.
But now, he was the only one who remembered him. The only one who remembered the man who had set him straight in a duel at the cost of a humiliation, the only one who remembered his battle against the Archbishop of Sloth, and the only one who could recall who Julius Juukulius was.
So if someone were to ask him what he thought of Julius, he would probably insult him — all while keeping an imaginary tenderness in his tone, remembering what the knight whose sword could not cut anything but his own future was currently enduring.

Before he's even thinking too hard about it, his legs move on autopilot. They lead him towards a very familiar white and pale purple uniform and without even realizing it, he's already sat down and arms have already snaked around his waist.
There's a sudden silence inside the lounge. Not uncommon- But very abrupt.
"What?" He echoes with palpable confusion.
Julius looks away with a faint tint of pink on his cheeks as Ferris howls with laughter that sends them careening into the floor.
Coincidences turn into habits, unfortunately.

Reinhard's smile slowly grows wider with each of their input- A warm feeling spreading through his chest like an ice cube being dunked into a vat of warm water, slowly thawing, slowly melting. But headaches don't leave with simple feelings of happiness, so it intrudes and makes his smile waver for a moment. He hides it by taking a sip of water.
His headache rings in his head, his vision clouds for a moment before something shifts. Something feels terribly, terribly wrong.
Subaru only sees a glimpse, a glimpse of Reinhard's eyes widening just a fraction before he rises and opens his mouth to shout something-

A thousand things rush through Reinhard's mind, he can barely comprehend what he's looking at and none of his thoughts explain what's happening infront of him.
There were no enemies, no one had broken into the mansion, Subaru's window was still perfectly shut and locked and he hadn't heard anyone but Subaru in his room as he'd approached.
So why? Why is Subaru covered in blood?
Or; Despite his long career as a knight and having the country's strongest healer as a best friend, Reinhard has his first real experience with self-harm and nothing could have prepared him for it to be because of the man he'd at one point thought had the weakest pain tolerance and highest aversion to pain among his 3 friends.
