Summary
Simon and Ryland Grace were dead before they had been sent on their prospective missions, bothgiven the allusion of a choice they were never allowed to make in the first place. There had only ever been one option for both of them; do your missions and choke on it.
Neither was supposed to be alive. Technically neither of them were, not on paper.
Grace is built of scraps of memories stitched together with massive holes that needed patching, but with kindness pouring out of him like water.
Simon is made of calcified soil, hard packed and sturdy as iron, walls erected to keep it all in, to keep it all safe.
Water can be a corrosive thing, a dangerous thing, a suffocating thing.

Dick’s jaw fell open. “Bruce?”
He was younger than Dick had ever seen him in person. Doing the math in his head, the Bruce before him would have been about nineteen. His hair was long and greasy, almost brushing his shoulders. Choppy bangs laid across his forehead and kept falling into his eyes. He was so pale. Even for Bruce. His cheeks were sunken in and the bags under his eyes were so dark they could have been bruises.
“No way,” Jason gibed. “This skinny rat is Bruce?”
Bruce scowled. “Who’re y'calling a rat, ya' fuckin' jagoff?”
“What the fuck did you just call me?”

Babs had said ‘malfunction’, Babs had said ‘not sure how far’, Babs had said ‘significantly longer.’ Dick really hadn’t been mentally present when she’d been explaining the details, but he certainly hadn’t been expecting ‘significantly longer’ to mean years. And yet, there was the evidence, in Tim’s face, in the very familiar couch he was now resting on that decidedly wasn’t the couch in Babs’s apartment.
Or: a freak accident lands a grieving Dick several years in the past. It goes about as well as you’d expect.

It’s a brisk July morning, and it’s snowing in Gotham City. It’s been snowing for exactly eight days, three hours, and twenty-seven seconds — the type of storm that has Gothamites scrambling to exit their apartment buildings at floor two instead of one. The snow is piling up, and New Jersey is less than equipped to handle it.
“Final step, Dami. This time, do what you just did, but repeat the pattern. Remember that this is rhythm, you can’t half-commit to it.”
“I never half-commit.”
“That’s right, you over-commit. It’ll only land you in the ice again, baby bat.” Dick glides ahead of the boy, twisting to get a good look at him. Dick’s legs already ache from the effort of pretending this is easy. His balance is muscle memory, but his muscle ability is another thing. Maybe he should’ve confronted Tim about the straws.

Summary
Running away from your problems is never the solution, but maybe this wasn’t running away. Maybe it was removing himself from the family that he hurt with his “death”. Who he couldn’t continue to burden, especially with something like this. Maybe this type of cancer wasn’t a death sentence, but it definitely would make them feel obligated to care about him again. And as much as he wanted to go home, he didn’t want the reason to be out of obligation and not love.
He’d always wanted to visit Maine anyway.
Or
Dick Grayson was diagnosed shortly after he came back from Spyral. His family is still angry, and he's alone dealing with Leukemia. This was his punishment. Dying all alone, his body killing itself.
