Summary

After an arduous battle with a gunshot wound and enteric fever, Captain John Watson is finally returning to London. In retrospect, the surgeons at the base hospital should have kept him a few more weeks, because it's a rather weak Watson that staggers off the ship. He expects no one to greet his arrival - after all, he left England with no close connections to friends or family. One night, while Dr. Abbot is out for a run, he comes across Dennis Whitaker in an alleyway. While Whitaker tries to insist otherwise, Jack eventually convinces Whitaker to spend the night at his apartment. He isn't sure if he'll be able to convince Whitaker of a more permanent solution to this, but at the very least, he's not going to melt in the rain overnight. As Whitaker prepares for bed, Dr. Robby decides to bring his long-term boyfriend some bagels and coffee.

A particularly tragic case has left Robby low. Jack comes over to raise his spirits, and though Robby is one secretive son of a bitch when it comes to his own feelings, everything seems like it will be okay.
Later, the unthinkable happens. The attempt leaves Robby in the hospital and Jack scrambling to make sense of it all. He would've preferred Robby shoot him stone-cold dead.
As he starts the long road to recovery, Robby and Jack wrestle with the aftermath. Not only dealing with the devastation of his partner trying to take his own life, Jack struggles with his moral obligations as a doctor, a friend, and a partner. Robby wants to continue to be a pillar for his family to depend on, but has to come to terms with the fact that he cannot be an island forever. -

A juvenile presents to the Pitt with an infected laceration. When Robby goes to examine, he finds that it's not only infected, the leg is dead from the knee-down. He breaks the news to his religious mother, who takes out a gun and gives Dr. Robinavitch an ultimatum: either he fixes the leg without amputation, or he dies.
At home, Jack struggles with guilt after an argument with Robby the prior night. He doesn't have time to make a proper apology with their shifts, but at the very least, he can bring Robby lunch as a peace offering.

While Flambae isn't too willing to thank the man who saw him have a breakdown while out in the field, they nevertheless have a talk in the bar after-the-fact. Flambae realizes that Waterboy might not be so bad after all... and if he brings Waterboy out of his shell, he might like what he finds.

It doesn't go well for either of them - and it brings up some memories that Otto would rather forget. Not remembering is so much easier.
Maybe he can destroy the memories, once and for all.
