Summary
Xue Yang bares his teeth in a smile, all violence barely leashed, and smooths his thumb over Song Lan’s cheekbone.
Sometimes Song Lan thinks it’s a shame that he’s going to be bound to this madman until their likely-mutual destruction at the hands of some cultivator who knows a monster when they see one. He could advance academic understanding so much, given the time and tools. For example: being touched by something alive, something alight with spiritual energy, is like having a brand laid on Song Lan’s skin.

A-Yuan cries. It is the only sound with meaning. He cries in the restless choked waves of a child beyond hope of relief, who believes that crying is all that is left to him.
Lan Wangji lies still and listens and is grateful for the sound, insofar as he is anything.
