She turns back around and picks up Abby’s hands to try and rub warmth back into them. She very pointedly does not acknowledge the pang in her chest, and how much it feels like when she found her, starved and tied to a post. Then, Joel’s lessons on survival ring in her brain.
Warm the body first. Losing a finger or two ain’t nothing compared to dying. Okay? Dry heat until they are no longer in danger, and then move ‘em to a warm bath if ya have one on hand.
Abby isn’t going to get warm enough like this. Lying stiff on the ground, her eyes close as she loses consciousness again. Ellie presses her fingers to her pulse. It’s too slow. She’s still too cold.
There was, another bit of advice that Joel gave.
Now Ellie, sometimes you’re not gonna have enough blankets to get ‘em warm. Or maybe they don’t have much time. If that’s the case, body heat works well.
Ellie closes her eyes and swallows.
If she was going to go to all of this trouble to save Abby in the first place, she can’t just stop at the finish line.

Ellie's head snaps up and over to where a girl's voice comes from, and she immediately regrets it when the world sways and her vision blurs.
"You're that girl from Jackson," the girl's bleary lips move, forming words that take Ellie a second to process. The name of Ellie's hometown back in Wyoming rings alarms in her head. How the fuck would anyone know that? She squints her eyes further, desperately trying to see who is chained up to the wall opposite from her. Is it one of Abby's friends? That's the only way someone would remember her.
When Ellie finally gets a good look at the girl's face, her heart pounds and her skin boils as white-hot rage floods through her body.
It's her.
"Abby." The name spills from Ellie's lips, sounding like a threat. She doesn't say her name with any ounce of uncertainty. She knows it's her. How could she ever forget that face? The face of Joel's killer that has haunted her nightmares for months.

Abby Anderson is a management consultant for FFL&Y, and Isaac of Washington Liberty Financial is her major client. She retreats to her cabin in Vermont with her dog Bear, where she relaxes by chopping wood, and doing woodcrafts.
Reader has just taken a contract at FFL&Y to fund their passion for printmaking, and they hope to do their first major exhibition later this year. They are staying at a family friend's cabin on the other side of the mountain, and come across Abby while lost in bad weather.
The two connect immediately, but will they be able to keep their professional and personal lives separate, and will Abby be able to keep her need for control in check?

The bus starts rolling from the station, the noise level cresting briefly and then dropping back down again, and Joel finally opens his eyes, chancing a glance over at the person sitting next to him.

"It's okay Joel, it's just really bad cramps." Ellie scuttles past him and crawls into her bed. "It's not a big deal. They're always bad in the beginning." She tucks herself into the blankets and grabs one of her comics, and starts reading.
Joel takes a deep breath and pushes himself up, his knees popping in protest. With a groan, he reaches down and grabs the hot water bottle from the floor, where he dropped it in his rush to get to her. Something about Ellie’s behavior has Joel on edge. It just doesn’t feel right. In the back of his mind, he has a memory that’s trying to surface, a time when he had seen something like this, but it just won't come. He walks over to Ellie and hands her the hot water bottle. She thanks him and tucks it under her blanket.
IE: Ellie and Joel deal with some unexpected consequences from their time on the road before Jackson.
