    Summary

    God never existed.

Not to Grace. It was all science. Science explained everything. He didn't believe in a higher being.

Simon, however, did. He believed in the Tree; his sustainer, his god, his only object worthy of worship.

Until he met Grace. An angel.

    His angel.

    Summary

Grace and Rocky are on their way to Erid when they encounter a strange terrestrial vessel that has somehow made its way to space. The single occupant is alive and Grace and Rocky rescue him, but they are then faced with the challenge of gaining this stranger's trust and dealing with the contamination he brought with him.

*slaps roof of fic* This bad boy can fit so many near-death experiences in it! But also friendship! And fucking (eventually)!

    "What do you WANT?"

“I just want you to live!” Grace threw up his hands in exasperation “Is that so wrong? Is that so hard to believe?!—” he lowered his hands and quieted his voice. It took enormous effort. “I just want you to stay alive, and I need you to just sit still so you don’t die.”

The man’s expression dissolved from roiling rage to bafflement. There was something else too though. Grace could see cogs spinning behind the man’s eyes. Something about that answer had stuck.

    Summary

    Simon’s nostrils flare.

Help? Nobody offers help without getting something in return. Help only exists in the hands of the people who chained him down, put him on a submarine and left him to die. Simon doesn’t need their “help.” And he certainly isn’t going to give them anything else.

    Hasn’t he given enough?

    Why isn’t it ever enough?

“Fuck off,” he snarls, fist clenching.

or: simon is dragged away from everything he knows and has to learn how to let it go little by little. he might just have a shot at impossible things like love and happiness if he can pull it off.

a series of interconnected scenes where simon must unlearn the universe he came from and begin to learn the one he has now

    Summary

“She sentenced you to death just for being scared,” Simon mutters, sounding less like he's talking to Grace and more like he's telling himself this.

Grace never thought of it like that. He doesn't like blaming Stratt, because she had to do what she had to do... but just this once, he'll let himself. “Yeah.”

They sit in silence for a long time. Simon usually looks sort of broody, but now he looks even more forlorn. There’s clearly something on his mind, but Grace doesn’t want to ask for fear of pushing him away.

Finally, Simon speaks. "We're the same."

    -

Something brings Simon to Grace, connected across worlds. They save each other, then learn to live beyond the saving.

    Summary

"Bad. Stupid, very stupid." Grace can still hear Rocky's automated laptop-voice through the closed airlock door. "If Grace body poisoned by 'foreign contaminant', Grace die, contaminate spread and Rocky die—"

There's more blood smudged on the floors, the walls, leading up, up...Oh. There's a handprint. A handprint of blood. There's no way that could have happened without Grace realizing.

Rocky's still rambling on in the background: "—Adrian die, Stars-Erid-Earth die, all die because Grace is stupid."

Grace can hardly believe the conclusion he's about to draw. "I think someone's on the ship."

"Repeat words. I was narrating Grace-Rocky future."

    "Rock, someone's on the ship."
