“No.” Aziraphale sat up, throwing his senses wide, searching, seeking, all the way to the edges of the world. “Crowley!” His frantic cry, amplified by his angelic power, rippled through the minds of every being with even the slightest occult sensitivity. Miles away, Anathema sat up in bed, and reached in panic for her lover when she felt the new absence in the world. Down the street from Jasmine Cottage, Adam Young tumbled from his covers, reaching out himself with what remained of his power. What he found was so terrible he fled from it, running to climb into bed with his parents like he hadn’t since he’d been very small.
“No,” the angel said again, his voice small and lost amid the stacks of lonely books. “No.” He pushed himself up with trembling hands, climbed to his feet, and didn’t stop running until he stood outside the door to Crowley’s Mayfair flat.

Crowley is the owner of the best reptile shop in London. He has very strict policies on who he permits to purchase his babies. He's got a reputation for being a mean, nasty piece of work, and he wears it like a badge of honor. So when a young boy comes in with his uncle to buy a snake for his birthday, Crowley is fully prepared to toss them both out. He's not prepared for the uncle to be a living, breathing angel.
Aziraphale just wanted to get Adam a snake. He didn't want to become infatuated with the owner of the shop, a redhead with the longest legs he'd ever seen and a walk that made his insides squirm.

Once upon a time, long before humans set foot outside of Eden and long before his inelegant landing in a pool of boiling sulfur, Crowley had been an angel. An angel with a very different name and far less cynicism. And that angel was made to build Her creations. He built stars, nebulas, and other beautiful and complicated things far out there in the cosmos. He shaped fundamental elements and materials into new creations. He molded burning fires and sculpted dust into breath-taking patterns. He started bright and powerful reactions, serving as a catalyst to spark the birth of stars. He set various celestial objects spinning.
He built. He took raw materials and built wonderous things with them. He built because that was the role that She made him for. In the end, was rebuilding that much different than building? And wasn't rebuilding fairly close to healing?
When it was his angel's existence on the line, Crowley was willing to grab at any chance available. He would find a way to fix what had been damaged. He would find a way to save him.

Summary
The mark on Crowley's face was not a tattoo.
When Lucifer, still furious and his pride damaged, took out his frustration out on the first thing to catch his attention after the Fall. Rage, possessiveness, and a need to prove that he was not as weak as he felt when he was cast out spurred him into action. He claimed the broken and fallen creature in every way, relishing the confusion and fear. And he left a piece of his power tangled up in the former angel's essence, the only easily visible sign being a shape manifesting on his eventual corporeal body. But rather quickly, Lucifer found other things to occupy himself and the demon was sent up to Earth to cause some trouble.
Six thousand years later and newly-enraged by the betrayal and halted apocalypse, Lucifer finally decides to make use of that power that he left behind. The devil is not one to surrender something that he'd claimed so easily. And the traitor would pay. He would make Crowley suffer.

The sleepy town of Tadfield was supposed to be peaceful, a town full of witches practicing their craft without worry of outside persecution. At least it was until someone let a demon loose. But local bookshop owner and garden enthusiast Aziraphale doesn't really care about all that nonsense, not when he has just acquired a new friend and companion in the shape of a Familiar.

Crowley used to be a god. A minor deity maybe, but a god nonetheless. He doesn't have much memory of that time, but if there's one thing he can tell with certitude, it's that it doesn't matter whether he's a mystic being, a cursed snake, or a mortal...he will never be free. He can't even begin to dream of mercy.
—“...‘Eliminate my kind’ huh? Why the rescue, then?” That part Crowley just simply cannot make sense of. “I guess it’s not for my pretty eyes, is it?”
Aziraphale purses his lips lightly but the way his gaze falls to the floor gives away he feels remorse.
“Your kind doesn’t usually look so...human.”
