Summary
The events of Book 4 go differently when Bai Wuxiang decides Wu Ming is too dangerous to be kept around and a certain farmer decides to take a different road to his customer's shop. With his last companion annihilated and not a single person stopping to help him, Xie Lian can do nothing but give in as Bai Wuxiang forces his hand.
Weeks later, Feng Xin rises to the Upper Court and finds the missing Crowned Prince he had been searching for smiling at the Emperor's side. He's more than ready to apologize and reconnect with His Highness when Mu Qing pulls him aside. Even though he doesn't want to admit it, he knows it's true. Something isn't right here. Things only become more apparent with the appearance of a new calamity clothed in red-stained white robes.

Xie Lian was not upset about what he lost. He swore up and down that he didn’t mind being immortal, ashes wrapped around his neck. Not a god anymore. Not really. So, Xie Lian made a home on a mountain, plagued with white flowers that sprouted from his blood and his footsteps, twisting along every pathway. Another ghost came to live with him, between the flowers and the trees and winding river Xie Lian kept thinking of drowning in. He said his name was San Lang. It wasn’t. It was actually Hua Cheng, but Xie Lian didn’t know how to bring that up. It wasn’t as important as everything else—gardens, flowers, silver butterflies, and sorting out his dreams from his perilous reality. Hua Cheng made space, and Xie Lian let him.
Dead god, very dead follower. It was almost funny.
He wasn’t sure what to do, seeing as he didn't plan to ascend once more, or plan to hold power over a kingdom again. Xie Lian wasn’t staying forever. The mountain would open up, and he would leave to become something catastrophic. Or he would finally disperse. Who was he to say?

Xie Lian has spent long enough around sirens to have some grasp of their communication, and some of it is even a little similar to mer noises. This sound, for example, is like the one podmates use to call for each other—curious, beckoning. He suspects it means much the same thing for sirens. Has this siren lost someone, maybe?
Hopefully it will find its lost someone soon, so Xie Lian can go back to sleep.
Then, because nothing good can ever happen to Xie Lian, the siren peeks beneath the overhang. It hangs its head over the jut of stone, its hair billowing like a crown of ink and the yellow sclera of its eye bright against the black. That singular eye catches on his, its pupil dilating, and Xie Lian stiffens.
