Summary
“Tommy and I broke up.”
Maddie deflates at the pain in her little brother’s voice. Before she can soothe him, Buck keeps talking.
“Mom and dad hate me, pretty permanently this time-”
“I’m sure-”
“And Eddie’s dad made it clear that I’m not welcome in his son’s or his grandson’s life. So.” Buck gives the most painful smile Maddie’s ever seen. Tears suddenly stream down his face. “Everyone’s leaving me.”
Or: Buck shows up at Maddie's doorstep with a fever and quite a few recent emotional scars. This makes Maddie put on her Big-Sister pants and say a few truths and burn a few bridges. She also brings home exactly what Buck needs to feel better, though technically, it was Eddie's idea.

Summary
Finding the meeting was a complete accident. Buck had just been walking around, trying to clear his head. At first he’d just thought it was a normal bereavement group meeting. And since his latest attempt at a relationship was dead, he had actually died for a little while, and he was constantly dealing with life and death situations on the job, he figured it wasn’t a bad place to be. Except then the group leader stood up and started talking about their sister who was fighting colon cancer. And … actually, everyone who spoke was dealing with a family member or close friend who was fighting cancer or who had passed away from it.
OR
Buck accidentally wanders into a support group for people who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis for a family member/friend. And he realizes that he never actually sought out or got support for learning he was a savior sibling. Opening up to strangers going through what he was going through was easier than he thought.

Summary
In hind sight, Buck really should have agreed with Bobby and told people that he had more issues after the bombing than just his leg. Bobby had seen the medical records, but when he’d looked ready to hold Buck back for a second time, to keep him as the man behind, Buck told him he’d lose his job for refusing work based on his new disability. It would be worse discrimination than just holding him back because of hurt feelings.
The point was, he should have told someone he was disabled. That he required hearing aids to be able to hear.
