Lance can only save so many people.
He knows this. Shiro embeds this fact into his skin and it molds into the marrow of his bones, so he knows.
The Aninian child he cradles doesn't. It hadn't expected to be an exception. It makes him think of the hope in the eyes of those he saved. How they’d delight at being alive to see the next day. He thinks that this child had the same hopes.
He thinks of the desperation he saw in its eyes as it clawed the ground, legs crushed under rubble, bubbling sobs of mercy and it had only wanted to live.
He thinks, wide eyed as he stares at its severed body. He thinks, and thinks, and thinks. He feels guilt rise and expand in his chest. He feels mortification as he realizes again what war takes in return for what it promises. He doesn't cry, he can't find it in himself to move at all.
